40 mm Bofors construction
Posted by constructor on Monday, July 18, 2011 6:04 AM

I am slowly progressing in the construction of my 40 mm Bofors. Due to the thinness of some parts like this gunsight mounting frame, they were bent out of shape and so I decided to fabricate one using brass wires. I traced the shape of the plastic frame on this small block of wood and bent the wire to shape. To make it easy for me to solder the joints, I stuck pins around the frame to hold the shape. And this is how it looks after soldering. I will cut the rings from the plastic frame and CA them to the wire frame. Other photos are some sub assemblies.  Some PE parts though do not have bend lines making it a guess work to bend them on the right place.

Nice scratch work on the replacement frame. Othe details look sharp as well. I'm surprised that we don't see more of these get built...the enthusiasm level was high when the kit was first announced as a boon to Allied modelers.

I did'nt have much choice but to make a replacement. The plastic part is so thin and straightening it will just make it worse. It's good I have brass wires almost the same diameter as the original part. The built is going smoothly though. The fit of parts is very good but I have to be very careful because there are so many tiny parts. I'm glad though that nothing yet has flown to my hungry carpet. (Knock on wood!). As I have mentioned before, my only problem is that some PE parts do not have bend marks making bending a guess work.

I got this, and the Bronco 17pdr, will get the 25pdr as well....

Now I'm saving up for an electron microscope & a bucket of BETA-Blockers.... Indifferent

When you start your build always use a very sharp blade to cut off small parts, specially the very small parts. Also be very careful in cutting small plastic from parts as it may be locating pins. I had this problem earlier when I was cleaning some parts. I aacidentally cut off a pin which I thought was flash. The kits have very small parts but which are most welcome as it add to the detail of the model. I'm thinking of getting the 17 pdr and the25 pdr. as well. I'm beginning to enjoy building artillery pieces.
