Cyber Hobby (Kit #9123) 15cm Sturm-Infanteriegeschutz 33
Posted by Hinksy on Friday, July 22, 2011 6:28 AM

Hi guys,

I saw this Cyber hobby kit in one of my favourite magazines and just fell in love with it. It's just screaming out for a German Grey basecoat with lots of rust-streaks and chipping on those HUGE slab-sided walls! Plus, you get 4 superb German Stalingrad figures as a bonus.

Anyway, yesterday was my pay day so gues what - I ordered it Cool It arrived this morning as I asked them to send it on the speedy delivery service so I had it for the weekend.

I have only built Tamiya this year and I really need something a bit more challenging on the assembly front so this was ideal and fits the 'Panzer III & Variants' GB perfectly - this will be my first entry, followed by my Tamiya Panzer III Ausf. N then finally I'll be building the Cyber Hobby StuG III C/D. Three GB entries! It runs for a year and I love working with the Pz III Chassis so it's ideal for me Yes

Box art:

CH9123

The question I have re this build (it's pretty straightforward) is making a second (scratchbuilt) stowage box. Look at the photo below (for discussion purposes only):

In the magazine that I originally saw this build in (not FSM but I'll tell you if you send a pm - I won't advertise other magazines on the open forum) the builder of it had scratchbuilt a larger stowage box that sat between the two uprights that are inbetween the Casemate and the box at the back (see the two uprights on the photo above). There are apparently proper 1/35 dimensions out there to make the correct box and I was hoping that someone could help me with these as I just cannot find them?

If anyone can help me with these box dimensions I'd be very greatful as I have no idea what they should be at present!

WIP on the GB starts tomorrow!

Many thanks,

Ben Toast

Cheers Anthony,

It certainly caught my eye! I recall reading that only 24 were ever made (?) and most saw major action in Stalingrad which is what my SIG is going to based on.

The figures are great and the part count is low so it should be fun!

If I can make that second box then that will be superb;  all I need are the correct 1/35 dimensions which are out there-somewhere!

The article I have details everything from assembly to detailing and is done over a fold-out 6 page piece!

Follow my progress, stating tomorrow, on the 'Panzer III & Variants' GB.

Hey Ben

That is a cool kit. I've been tempted by that one a couple times myself.

As to your question - I'm not sure exactly what you need. Can't you just 'guess'-timate the dimensions based on the area available to you on the back deck, where you want to put the box? Or is there something about the other guy's build that requires more precision than that?

I also gotta say - WOW, getting it to you in one day - that is sweet. I cannot wait to see how this comes together for you.

Erm Embarrassed

Sorry, guys - my buddy at work was trying out his new i-pad and I asked to have a look on here but it wouldn't let me type a reply to this post - although it did post Tigermans quote!?

As for TM's original question, yes - it does come with the proper yummy scrummy Magic Tracks and PE grills for the air intakes.

I can't wait to start knocking this one together - it looks like a superb kit. Dragon style quality and Tamiya style simplicity (looking at the destructions anyway)!

As for the scratchbuilding of the box - it will be simple enough to put a rough one together BUT the author of the magazine article made a reference to an Osprey book called 'Modelling the Bison & the Grille' or something like that. Apparently it gives the correct 1/35 scale dimensions needed to make the 'proper' box with the hinges in all the right places and rivet detail etc. Does anyone have that book?

It's one of the CH orange-box re-issues of the older kits in the DML line, so you'll have to watch out for mold seams and other clean-up related issues as you build it but the upgrades to the tracks and inclusion of PE screens will be worth it. I built the original kit some time back and have a blog thread on it that should help you avoid any pitfalls along the way Ben. Can't help you on the box dimensions though unfortunately. Looks like a fun project! Beer

Cheers Bill,

The lower hull is already assembled along with the roadwheels, drive and idlers.

You can definately tell that it's an older Dragon kit but I haven't come across any nasty sink holes and the general quality of things appear to be very good.

I'm just about to update the GB wip if you want to check out out.

FYI - I managed to find the box dimensions! I stumbled across a few 'preview' pages of the book I referred to on the Osprey site and one of them just happened to be the exact page with the very paragraph that I needed Yes

There's been a few of these Orange box kits that have caught my eye. Not yet taken the plunge yet though, think the fact they are older Dragon kits has sort of put me off a bit.

You know, they're priced right, but don't come with all the goodies that are in the latest Smart Kits or Premium kits. So, by the time you upgrade, you might as well buy the latest release. MHO

Well, for me, if they come with indy links tracks i would stick with them, and i get the PE sets for the smart kits anyway. So the only difference would be the barrel.

But alot of these Orange box kits seem to be subjects that dragon haven't done in newer form, thats whats attracted me most.

Hey Bish & TM,

This is the first Cyber-Hobby kit that I've bought so let me build it and I'll pass judgement. So far it's a really nice build that has been kept simple by a low part count and basic assembly.

The good thing is there really is nothing to upgrade. I'm not changing the barrel as that's fine and I like Magic tracks so it's an ideal purchase for me. The bonus addition of the four 6th Army Stalingrad figures is a definate Yes These are very well made and the detail on them is crisp & exquisite - looking at them I don't think the figures are from an older kit?

Anyway - here's a couple of photos from the magazine article of this very kit that I'm working from:

They definately have PE and indy links Bish Wink :

Here you can see the box that I want to build:

I've just updated my wip on the Panzer III GB if you want to take a look.

Doesn't sound to bad. I have built a couple of the older dragon kits, and didn't really have to much of an issue. Ye, not the same as the newer kits, but then probably not as confuseing either. Will have to keep an eye on the GB and see how this comes along.

That was the first thing that grabbed my attention buddy - no mega 'busy' and confusing instructions and everything kept plain and simple! Admittedly the build is fairly straightforward but you know how Dragon can really make life hard for you with their newer stuff! This DEFINATELY has lots of potential and I'm glad I found that magazine!

I'll keep my wip on the GB forum regularly updated. for the price I can highly recommend this kit - the four figures alone are superb!

Hi Terry,

I found the book on line and I was able to preview a few pages using the left/right arrows at the top to flick between certain pages via this link:

http://books.google.com/books?id=rxzwaaG2HpAC&pg=PA8&source=gbs_selected_pages&cad=3#v=onepage&q&f=false

On page 11 the boxes are detailed and the measurements are provided in mm for what I assume are the correct boxes as it shows them in the photo.

Easily overlooked unless I have read it wrong Terry Yes

Hi, All!

I'd echo some of the previous: The CH SIG 33 auf Pz. III kit is, IMO, a pretty nice kit. It's the best styrene 1/35 available of this very cool (ugly, too) beast - to-date (OK, also the only one, being it's the old DML kit with added figs, Magics and maybe a little PE?). I found the mentioned Osprey book and its build to be nothing less than really inspirational - I got the book and... hauled out and got this kit, just because of this!

I think it's a good kit that asks for a few tweaks to become great. The Osprey lay-out shows quite a bit of detailing and mods - I'm going a much - simplified route;  I'm replacing those somewhat lacking road wheels with some from a current Dragon PZ III kit (turns out that the recent Pz. III E "France" kit comes with a set of extra road-wheels... how handy! - providing you have that kit...).  New wheels with those little reinforcement posts and good depiction of the rim-welds will really compliment the kit's Magic Tracks. Adding on that second box and some deck stowage are also on my list. I'm thinking maybe just a bit of detailing front and back (chains on tow-eye pins, spare road-wheels per the known photos, heat-shield / deflector over the exhausts, a nice tow-cable, and carefully square or sharpen the edges around the barrel-muzzle), and it'll be a nice addition to the shelf.

Of course...  now that folks are talking about building this thing... Mr. Dragon will soon start on a modern SmartKit of it. I figure each old DML kit which becomes one of these CH orange-box "value" re-releases is a toe-in-water test leading to new kit...  - Consider the Jagdpanzer IV L/70 (V), then the L/70 (A)...  I expect we'll soon see a late-production "Brummbar" pop up (OK, 2 kits - first w/o zimm, followed soon by 1 with) - and, of course, a nice new SIG 33! Build these old things while you can!Whistling

Really looking forward to seeing your beast come together and appear here!

Hi Bob. You have some good insights and could well be right about new releases. I too picked up that Jagdpanzer IV and it's light years ahead of their old Imperial version.

Hi guys,

Bob - I'm pleased that my latest wip and associated posts on here have prompted you to buy the kit. She goes together so well and easily that this has been a real fun build so far.

The four figures are very good and extremely well detailed with crisp mouldings.

I'm having to go with the kit road wheels but they are fine and apart from the second box the only things I'll be doing will be adding spare wheels mounted at the front of the casemate and putting two small runs of thin wire around the Periscope hood 'legs' as I've found out that the real thing had these to stop debris and other rubbish from getting in and affecting the Periscope.

I've mentioned it on my blog on the group build section (check out my progress if you haven't already - it's being built as part of the Panzer III & Variants GB) but the only thing that has gone slightly wrong so far was me not using enough Magic Track links for the track runs. The sag was perfect but as the glue dried it contracted and pulled nearly all of the sag out of them - they still look fine so lesson learned I suppose! Shame as I do like a bit of sag!

Best of luck with your build matey.

All the best,

Ben Toast
