For Your Viewing Pleasure.... Universal Carrier
Posted by BaBill212 on Monday, August 1, 2011 8:33 PM

Greetings All....

This is an older build that I snapped some photos of this evening...       (35th scale)           The venerable old Tamiya Universal Carrier with a Tamiya figure. Some additions - removed the plastic camo net and replaced with cheesecloth "netting". Scratchbuild 50 cal mount and a load of additional gear within the vehicle. Some tissue tarps, painted paper tie down "straps" with brass buckles holding the fuel cans,,,, etc. etc.

50 gallon drum, white metal British helmet and a white metal palm tree from,,, (heck if I remember,,,, sorry).

All Polly S acrylic paints,,,  pastel and natural ground dirt / powder weathering.

All comments welcome,, hope you like

Nice work especially the diomara! Yes  What did you use for the rocks?  I like them because they are not too uniform.  Cat litter?

Another fine BaBill build....

I don't believe I've ever seen one of these here on the forum.

Very interestingly detailed.

Thanks for posting your pics.  In future builds, beef up any proposed .50cal MG mounts.  If you look at real ones, they are quite substantial as the kick is huge.  Plus if a crewman were firing yours, he'd most likely knock unconscious anyone in the driver's compartment with the blast effect.

Thanks for the kind words gentlemen.....

Andy,     the rocks are real pebbles / cinders that I scoop up occasionally. These are mostly leftovers from snow road treatments. They vary from very fine, almost powder, to bigger pebbles. I attach and paint them while on the base.

Thanks for the advice Roy...   knowing what I do now, I probably would have upgraded the 50 mount and maybe positioned it a little differently. This little scene is probably 25 years old... so who knows what I was thinking back then.

Thanks again all

Bill

Enjoy the ride!

Very nicely done. I agree with Roy regarding the .50 cal; weak mount and spent casings exit the weapon from the underside in a forward and downward direction. It'd be like someone with a ballpeen hammer whacking you on the back of your helmet ;)

I've always like the Tamiya Bren carrier. It was among one of the first Tamiya kits I'd ever built nearly 30 yrs ago.

Very sharp Bill, great job on the carrier, the diorama, and the figure looks great too.

Thanks Rob,, and I agree,,, the 50 would have been better relocated and with a true mount. But, way back when I built it I didn't take these details into account...       Ah, yes,,  we live and learn.

And I thank you Gamera,,,, appreciate the kind words.

Enjoy the ride!

Always interesting to look back at past builds and see how far things have come, both in terms of kits and also individual build/finish progress. For something done 25 years ago, it definitely has withstood the test of time Bill! Beer

Thank you Bill !,,    cheers!!

I agree,,, It is fun to look back on older builds and think,,, what was I thinking? Or,,, hey that is not all that bad. I always always state that I try to improve on each and every effort. Even if it is something miniscule, its forever a learning experience.

Enjoy the ride!

Well, thank you Bish,,,  certainly appreciate the kind words.

It seems like most of the finished pieces I have about are in the 10 year + range...  not that that is a bad thing I guess. I suppose I have slowed my builds down as of late. It seems like it takes me months to complete even a simple project.

As long as we enjoy the hobby,,,,,   which is what it's all about

Enjoy the ride!
