Not to mention the "scorched earth" policy followed by both sides. I can't imagine an operational railroad track crossing any front lines. They were destroyed by either army as they retreated due to the fortunes of war. And IIRC the Germans and Soviets used different gauges of railway so it was not a simple case of puting German rolling stock on any intact captured Soviet rail lines. If the Soviets did use an armored train in combat at Kursk, it was due to the Germans managing to penetrate the defenses to an area where there were still operational tracks and the train was there already. The Soviets prepared the battlefield there for months ahead of the German offensive. Most German usage of Armored Trains that I have read about have them being used as rail line security against Partisan operations on German rear area rail lines.

I don't know if that would be practical.  I mean...all you have to do is hit the rail line just ahead of it and it is effectively imobile.   Also I fhe battle shifts, the armour train is stuck only where the rail line goes.

Did the Germans ever use Armoured trains in Cohesion with an assault that was on a town or near a railway that the trains could actually bring there guns to bare on enemy units almost like they were SPGs but on rails. I read that the Russians had used an armoured train at kursk it was in Armored Battles of the Waffen SS.
