Hi Ro. I built the Magic tracks once and loved them. Here's what i did last time:
  • Make a jig to align the tracks as you're building them.
  • Build one side at a time.
  • Build one long run, then apply Testors liquid cement in the pink bottle with a brush.
  • I dab it on pretty good, then let dry an hour.
  • After that, they should be somewhat dry and won't break when you pick them up.
  • Next, you should be able to shape them around the sprocket and idler, down towards the bottom. Leave one link unglued. ( might be helpful too leave the one unglued link between the idler and bottom wheels
  • For sag, place cotton balls or wadded tissue where you want the sag.
  • Let dry 24 hrs.
  • Remove and they should be ready to paint.

Now, that's how i do it. If you paint everything, including the tracks on the vehicle, then ignore leaving a link unglued and removing after 24 hrs.

Also it's helpful if you leave the idler and sprocket unglued, for it's easier to reassemble. Also it was advised by another member to add one extra link, because of shrinkage when it dries.

Good luck.

Magic tracks will not stay together without glue. While they may have a slightly tight "friction" fit to each other and this will allow say 5 or so links to be joined together and hold without glue, this is not enough to keep them together as any type of coherent track run. DML designed them that way to make it easier to assemble them but glue is a must.

They will snap together and hold enough to be put in place but I'd drop a little glue on the join once in place even after painting as I just dont trust the hold they get and the last thing you want is a hand full of track in two weeks.

Depending on the type, they do "snap" together.  They still need to be glued though as the joint isn't that strong.

Question about magic tracks
Posted by Persephones_Dream on Sunday, September 11, 2011 2:20 PM

Hi all!

I am eyeing up a Dragon PzKpfw III I have in my stash of unbuilt kits. I mostly model airplanes but do the occasional armor kit, too. Trouble is, I've never encountered magic tracks befofe.

So - do these things snap together or do you have to glue each link to the next? The directions are rather unclear about this.  Sorry for the dumb question but as I said, I'm a magic track virgin.

Thanks!

-Ro
