Great Reference Site
Posted by deattilio on Sunday, September 25, 2011 8:46 PM

I stumbled across this web site and after doing a quick phrase search on FSM for zero results so had to share.  The site is Critical Past and is an incredible resource for original period footage — and just in time for looming projects.  You can watch the video on the site, order video — a tad too rich for my blood and needs though or order stills from the film at a reasonable cost.  I have just placed two separate orders and should be able to provide info on quality once they arrive on my door step.

One order is color stills of LVT-A4s during the assault on Iwo Jima exposing some glaring errors in how the majority of kits are finished today.  No doubt from the “modern” interpretation of black and white photos from the period.

My other order is stills of the 111th Squadron when they operated O-47s, great help as I have yet to find any other photos to help with proper markings.  Had I proceeded with what I thought were the markings based on previous and post markings of aircraft the unit flew I would have been wrong.

The stills will be excellent as addition reference atop my hobby desk when they arrive or placed into the individual kits sitting in the stash.  Good luck and good hunting for your own reference videos or stills.
