Bingo, Bondo...

The other guys will have to edit the title in their replies themselves, though...

Got it. Now I'll see if I can get the revised title of the thread to stick.

Point of Order..

"ANG" is Air National Guard.. The Army Guard is abreviated, "ARNG"... In your Dad's case, it's "MIARNG" for MIchigan ARmy National Guard", as each state's Army Guard (or Air Guard) uses it's two-letter abreviation in front of it, TXARNG for Texas, MNARNG for Minnesota, IAARNG for Iowa, so on an' so forth.....

Thank you. I am sure your father will be very happy. Any questions along the way feel free to reach out here or on PM.

As for household replacements, I know the feeling....some larger items here have had to be replaced this year.

Enjoy

Mike that's the BEST WIP I have ever read! Really well done. Rather than scare me off, it convinced me that following your advice I can make a big gun that will at least pass muster.

Thank you.

So I spent the better part of $ 100 on the kit, the PE and the tracks. I kind of went WTH on those, because if I fail, hey there's always a couple of options. But I'm a ship modeler mostly, and used to things like the HMS Victory- 100 guns nine parts each. Just calls for big sorting trays.

I think a base will be a key element. if only because if/ when it starts to get busted up, it'll be a real loss. And dad will want to handle it.

It should be here just about in time for Xmas, my present to Dad and myself. Ms. Bondo and I just got each other ours- the furnace went DOA last Friday. 20 years of solid service.

The eduard PE is nothing spectacular but worth it. There is a lot you don't need. Main items I used were the headlight guards, the tie downs, and the big item is the front fenders. The fenders make the set worth it.

Here is my build log for my M40

Hopefully it helps

I also see that there's an Eduard PE set for it. Any opinions? Not too expensive at $ 24.

Thank you very much Gino!

I don't suppose the tracks issue is one he'd notice, but I'll see what I can dig up.

Man, that's a big gun! Apparently his ANG record was less than stellar, and he never mentions it. When they moved out here in 52 he did his maneuvers at Camp Roberts. I don't have any pictures from there.

The guns are M40 GMCs (Gun Motor Carriage) 155mm howitzers.  AFV Club does a really nice kit of it in 1/35.

It is a pretty accurate and well detailed kit.  The only issue I noted was the cradle for the gun is too short by about 8mm.  It is a pretty easy fix by using a couple Sherman road wheels as plugs to lengthen it though.

The ones in the pic also have later T84 rubber chevron tracks on them.  AFV Club makes a set replacement T84 tracks.  I don't recommend them though, they are really a pain to work with.  I recommend trading with someone for a couple sets of the Dragon T84 tracks plastic indi-link tracks from one of their Sherman kits.  They are much easier to work with.

I used Dragon indi-link plastic T80 tracks on mine.

Good luck.

Here's a couple of pics of Dad's unit fighting the good war at Fort Grayling Michigan in 1950.
