M42 from AFV Club coming soon?
Posted by deafpanzer on Sunday, October 16, 2011 1:24 PM

I know many of us have been looking forward to this.  This was posted in other forum and I thought I'd let you guys know about this.  It was announced at All Japan Hobby show...

For more pictures... visit this website but it is all in Japanese.

Have to get one as soon as it comes out.  My dad-in-law was assigned to one when he served in the Army in the early 60's...

I agree Stik!  I want to get that AFV 231 kit and GMC 40mm from Hobby Boss too... jeez!  So many good stuff coming out... I don't think I will get something from Dragon... a surprising disappointment for me.  Maybe that Sig 33... not too sure.

I just looked up the M42 Duster because I wasn't really familiar with it... decided I have to build one as my next kit, really cool and something not WW2. How's the Tamiya kit? Looking at the pricing I can tell it's one of their older kits, which I don't mind. I'm on a budget too, AFV Club will be out of my range. I like the older Tamiya kits since they're simple enough that I can work them into my schedule, so worth the $23 and commitment of my precious modeling time?

(I really, really want to do a nice AFV Club kit, they look nice... but I simply can't justify the price.)

The Tamiya one is one of their old, '70s era kits.  OOB it is very poorly detailed and lacks a lot.  It can be upgraded and reworked though.  I did one a while ago and updated it with new tracks and running gear from AFV Club, reworked the barrels, hatches, air filters, gun breeches, etc., etc., etc.  It was a bunch of work, but came out pretty well, if I don't say so myself.

If I were to build another, I would wait for the AFV Club kit myself though.

Fascinating. What a detail gem, Gino. Certainly the right subject for that, like a Marder.

So that led to a little reading and I learned a bunch. I remember reading abt. the Duster from Viet Nam being used as a base defense weapon. Wiki suggests it "mowed down mass infantry charges" which I doubt much happened, but certainly formidable running towards a bunch of horizontal flak.

The ones in Euro and Mid East service look to have very complicated muzzle brakes.

Did the M75 APC ever see much service?

Always a pleasure reading about what you guys are interested in.

Gino- Great work on that old Tamiya Duster! YesYes  I had that old kit in my hands twice and looked at it very closely... I had to walk away because it just looked way too old.  Tools were molded to the hull I recall.

Can't wait to buy the new kit as soon as it comes out! Big Smile

Oh yeah, the old Tamiya kit is as mean as a junkyard dog. I'm morking on it since four years now and I still wonder what happens first - can I finish my model or wil AFV finally cough out that new Duster. And I don't know what I'll do when they can do it first!

For a detailed list of changes you need to do, to make Tamiya accurate and a set of scale plans of the duster, please visit my web page:

Hope it helps, have a nice day

The Tamiya kit is on par with its' Tamiya contemporaries such as M41 Bulldog, M3 Stuart, and Panzer V Panther A. But as shown by Gino, can be made into a real gem of a kit using various accessories. AFV Club makes replacement suspension and tracks. Molded on tools can be replaced by the set from Academy, Eduard makes a PE sent to replace such things as stowage boxes, gun shields, sights, etc. I have all of them for my Tamiya Duster and hopefully one day soon will tackle it. It will not be overly difficult I think, just involved and time consuming.

But Pawel, since AFV is now showing box art and actual kit sprues, I think they may have their Duster released before your M42 is completed...Wink

Stik- Maybe we should make a bet... who will come out with M42 first?  You or AFV... I am going to root for you.  Let's say a case of Beer is the prize... Big Smile

Like you said, AFV is showing actual kit sprues so it could be any time soon.  So you better hurry, buddy!

I wont even be touching mine this year my freindWink My goal this year was to clean up as many of the partial builds as I could this year. throw in a move, death in the family, etc and while I have made a good dent in the back log, there is still a ways to go!
