PzKpfw 38(t) a in Polish Campaign details needed...
Posted by Darkowski74 on Thursday, October 20, 2011 10:34 PM

I started work on a Trumpeter panzer 38(t) a (chech tank) during the invasion of Poland, but I have trouble finding picture references of the tanks... there are some pics but of the later models.

I have a few questions.

1. What markings did they have exactly on the hull. Just the numbers or the German cross as well?

2. About the German tankers; from what I understand they wore black berets early in the war and later changed for the 'caps'. Am I right?

3. Any physical apparent changes between the 38(t) a and the later models?

4. There's this box on the rear left-hand side just under the exhaust (parts TB-36,43,49,50,51). What is that exactly? The instructions show to assemble and mount it, but later on the last page of the instructions the completed model doesn't have it anymore... and I haven't seen it on any pic on the internet.

5. Lastly, any tips on how to assemble the individual tracks on the return rollers? Confused

Thank you!

Darek,

This sight has several photos that may help answer your questions:

You'll see the markings on many Pz. 38(t) vehicles during the Invasion of Poland, some of the berets that are worn by the tank crew, etc.

However, you may have a problem using the Trumpeter kit to represent a Polish campaign vehicle.  If I'm not mistake your kit represents an Pz.38(t) Ausf.E/F which was manufactured from November 1940 to May 1941, well AFTER the invasion of Poland (September 1939).  The Ausf. A is the correct version for Sept. 1939.  There is one big difference between the A and the later E/F and that is the front driver's plate.  The E/F has a straight driver's plate while the A through C had one half of that plate recessed several inches.  This photo shows the front plate (I think the vehicle is actually an Ausf. A!) http://waralbum.ru/19831/

Other differences are the antennas used, the height of the muffler, the lights and some other minor differences.  It might be easier to backdate a Tristar Ausf. B kit to an Ausf. A than with your Trumpeter Ausf. E/F.

Anyway I hope this helps.  There are a lot of members here with more knowledge of this vehicle...I'm sure they'll chip in with more help!

Thank you for the links!

As you see I'm totally new to armor and its history Embarrassed

Indeed, I have the E/F version. It's written on the box about the 38(t) and the Polish campaign so I thought that there was a choice of the version to build (didn't know that the version used in Poland was the 'a' when I was buying the kit).

I see now. I was hoping that the additional 25mm plate added to the driver's side would be from the inside hehe.

Now.... gotta come up with a new plan for a diorama...
