Revell 1/9 Kettenkrad

Good morning Gentlemen,

Having been building model ships for the last two or three years my visits to this forum have been very limited.

At the moment I am working on an oldie I had in my stash that I bought years ago for about 50 Euro's in a sale.

The fit is abominable, everything is surrounded by a thick halo of flash and a lot of parts are clunky despite the large scale. It is taking huge amounts of Mr. Surfacer and Mr. Dissolved Putty to mask the potholes, ejector marks and other assorted scars.  I am rather enjoying the build though, and I decided to bore you gentlemen with some snaps of my progress:

As you can see there is still a very long way to go.

Cheers,

Julian Geeked

Nice to see you around these parts again Julian! Sorry to hear the large-scale kit has issues but would never know it based on the pics you've posted. Keep us posted!

Thanks for the welcome Bill, it's a nice change of pace and venue to be back here.

At the moment I am working on the three sub assemblies that make up engine, transmission and radiator/cooler:

I hope to get some wiring added today so that I can put on the first coat of ground paint. Fitting the dashboard to the hull part is going to need some filling and sanding as there are very pronounced gaps visible.

Cheers,

Julian Geeked

Hi Andy, glad I managed to catch your attention Smile

First ground coat of Vallejo grey sprayed on: still some sink marks and other odds and sods that need correcting. Photo's:

Starting to look like something now,

Most of the basic sub-assemblies are ready now and have been sprayed with Vallejo grey ground and the a layer of Tamiya hull red to provide a red prime coat. I have made my first attempt at the "hairspray" method of weathering for the drivers position. There seem to be more photo's of pristine and well maintained K-rads than well used and mangy looking originals. I would guess that the floor and pedals would be well chewed up by the hobnail boots used by German troops. Photo's:

Also commenced work on the road- and sprocket wheels.

Cheers,

Julian Geeked

Coming along nicely Julian! The big scale is a perfect canvas for bringing out the details. The camo pattern looks sharp as well. Beer

Hi Bill,

thank you! Your compliment on the camo hits the right spot Smile I use a Neo by Iwata to do the camo here, not bad for a budget airbrush. Now to be careful not to go mad on the weathering. I understand that the K-rad was nearly a all aluminium so rust is a no no here. Muck, mud, grime and gunk after being used in the Caucasus would abound though.

cheers

Julian

p.s. Would this camo be appropriate for 1942/43 in the Caucasus? I know, I´m a lousy researcher Tongue Tied

Not really...it's a three-tone camo over DY that didn't come into use until Feb '43 and that particular style was something that was more commonly seen later on in the year and into '44 as a field applied scheme.

Thank you very much BaBill212,

I love looking at photos of other builds but I tend to get carried away and post a lot of pic's. The K-rad is turning out ok considering it's age and the evident state of the molds.

Cheers,

Julian Smile

Started weathering some of the sub assemblies. Also started painting the engine. Cooler fits perfectly and looks nicely used:

yes, nearly finished here. Uphill battle with this ancient model: dreadful fit and unlimited flash....................

Managed to super-glue and putty it into submission though Smile
