Hi again,
Wonder if you can offer advice, can I build this kit without Zimmerit?
Dragon # 6358, Panther A, Sd.Kfz.171, Late production.

Very Best Regards

This is a late production A and i am positive that you should add Zimm if you want to be accurate. Check out a review here.

Bish has you covered. Late A's all had zim.

Johan - it's not difficult to backdate that kit to an early A variant if you're trying to avoid doing zimm - all of the early parts are included in the box (but marked as "not used"). If you're interested, I can tell you what changes you'd need to make.

Johan - I was going to type it all out, but if you go to the links at Perth for the DML Early A and Late A kits, he's got a complete list of the differences all laid out.

http://www.perthmilitarymodelling.com/reviews/vehicles/dragon/dr6160.htm

http://www.perthmilitarymodelling.com/reviews/vehicles/dragon/dr6168.htm

The biggest differences are the type of mount for the hull machine gun (ball vs letterbox), the mantlet (one hole vs two hole), and the presence of the pistol ports on the turret.

If you've got any more questions after reading those links, let me know! Big Smile

Thank you Dupes,
After having spent some time on the net googling for images I got carried away and went shopping.
So I am now the happy owner of 2 uncompleted Panther's.
6358 which is a A late and then also
6428 which is a D with zimmerit.

I guess what freaked me out was the version designation of the Panther. It appears to me as if the main external difference between the D and the A is the redesigned turret with the new cupola being the most noticeable difference.

Could someone comment if I am off track here?

The reason for asking these questions is that when looking at the kits it looks as if I can pretty much mix and match and get a D without zimmerit and an A with zimmerit.
Some modifications would be required such as adding a loaders periscope and making a decisssion on the ball mounted MG but it looks doable.

Very Best Regards
Johan

Hi Johan,
I am not sure but it looks to me as if you will scrap 2 to make 1.
And with quite some effort to get the 1 right.

But I am surprised that the D was before the A?
And that the Dragon D offering is pre zimmed and the A is not?

The good news is that both have been pictured with and without Zimmerit (but only rarely) and the changes appart from the cupola seems to be somewhat floating in the early days of the A.

Good luck and Kind Regards
Uto
