Any Pz.III ausf H kits out there?
Posted by modeler#1 on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 7:45 PM

Hello,

I recently came across a picture of Pz.iii H's advancing on moscow. The tanks markings are easily seen so I plan to model this tank. the problem is I am unable to find a Pz.iii H on the market. I am tempted to use a G variant since they both had the same gun. Does anybody know of a kit i can use?

Dragon made a Panzer III H standard gun tank and Tauchpanzer III H in their Imperial Series back in the 90s. I am building the III H over in the Panzer III GB now.

Dragon's gun tank version is kit number 9029. I don't know if it's still in production, I found mine on Ebay.

Dragon has a new H model out, number 6642 in the smart kit series.  It has the short 50 mm gun.  If you need the long barreled one, that shouldn't be too hard to replace with after market.  It's a better kit than the older PzIII s they did, which are still pretty good.  The turret shape in the back of the H is different than the G if I remember correctly.  Those models are hard to tell apart at times without really good photos to work off of.

The two biggest differences visually between the G and the H are the turret and front return roller. On the G the return roller is mounted further back from the sprocket. On the turret, the rear plate of the G has a projecting cylinder extending up into the cupola. On the H the turret rear plate is a single piece behind the cupola.

See if you can find a copy of the old Squadron-Signal PzKpfw IV In Action.  It has reference photos and a text blurb concerning the differences between the G and the H.
