My first 1/35 Tiger (Birthday Present):
Posted by Hinksy on Friday, November 4, 2011 10:43 AM

Hey guys,

I hope you are all very well today.

Ok, it's my Birthday today (32) and my parents said they would buy me a new kit. I'm currently without a Tiger I in my cabinet as my first Tiger I was the 1/48 Tamiya version and it was also my first ever kit so obviously it was pretty terrible and ended up as a test bed. My second attempt on this kit ended in a big disaster and I haven't been near one since!

I decided on the Dragon kit# 6600 which is the "Ausf E Tiger I Initial Production - s.Pz.Abt.502 Leningrad Region '42/'43" Yes

What can I say? She's a BEAUTIFUL kit and crammed full of goodies. She comes with DS Tracks which I know some don't like but on a vehicle like this where loads of sag isn't required I'm more than happy to use DS tracks .

It's a 3 -in -1 kit so I have to decide on what I'm going to build as nearly every step of the build guide calls out for which of the three you want. The lovely glossy colour marking and paint guide supplied shows a whitewashed Tiger from Abt. 502 numbered '3' (see box art in the photos below) described as 'Mishkino, Feb '43' with a rear turret bin, an Abt. 502 numbered 100, whitewashed and described as 'Mga, Dec '42' with the early side turret bins and the third is another early 502 vehicle numbered '123' and descrided as Tosno, September '42 and painted in German Grey.

I think I either going to go with the side turret bin build (December '42) or the 1942 Tosno build in a straight German Grey - not 100% yet

I think the side bins would make a VERY nice change - wbill's Tiger I like this looked great. Another interesting option is to have a snorkel fitted and all the MG holes etc buttoned up with a honking big tube on the back deck! I've never seen that before now.

A couple of questions for the Tiger I fans on here:

  • They supply two left hand tracks and one right hand track - it says the side turret bin build needs a reversed left track i.e. put on facing backwards, the other 2 options are mirrored. Could Ijust use normal left and right tracks and be okay?
  • It asks for numbers to be shaved off the edge of sprue 'P' and stuck to the mantlet but it doesn't state what numbers? Can anyone help with this i.e. should there be a 'proper' number or do I just make one up? How many digits?

I'll be starting this next week and will be building it as part of Kermits 'Ostfront II GB'. I cannnot wait! Cool It's not going to be a 4 week build - I'm really going to town on this and will be spending a few months on it, there's no rush Wink You guys taught me that!

Some photos:

The Snorkel!

Side Turret Bin option:

The non-whitewashed very early Tiger I from September '42 which I like:

Box Art Tiger '3':

Thanks for looking chaps and sorry for the awful Camera Phone photos,

I'd be interested to hear your views on which option I should go for as they all appeal but I'm not into the reversed track if I chose that option. Could that be omitted?

Also, any ideas re the Mantlet numbers?

I'm not well educated on the Tiger so I may have to ask a few questions on the way!

All the best,

Ben Toast

Nice kit too,,,,  a beaut!             While I am not an expert on Tigers (or much of anything really), I do like the side bin configuration.         I'm sure  you'll get a number of posts from gents who do really know.

Thanks Bill & Greg,

I'm thinking of going with the side bins. They do look good and it would be so nice to a slightly different early Tiger I for a change!

The original version of this kit (was it 6252 or something) had a metal bucket, metal shackles and a metal barrel option! Looks like they've cut back on this one so I'll order a new metal barrel but that will be all. I've actually got a set of four 1/35 Brass shackles which are perfect for this kit.

Cheers matey,

Ben Toast

Ben:

Good to hear that you like the kit, I put a lot of time into it.

There were 9 Tigers sent to this unit in 1942, and all of the known photos of them are thumbnailed here

http://www.tiif.de/thread.php?threadid=16&sid=bf09bac9978aca31f713d8d4f7e3eb46

down to the point where it says "2nd company"

A brief summary: the Tigers were sent to the unit in 3 batches, all painted grey, and all with right/left tracks. The small turret bins were added to the rear of the turret by the unit. These were from Pz.3 because the Tigers units used Pz 3 to fill out their numbers.

The Tiger wasn't ready for "prime time" yet and the vehicles broke down frequently.

The decal scheme "123" is based on a photo from this period, but it's an error, we now know that the photo showed "121". In fact we know most of the ID numbers that were painted on these Tigers, but not all; I make suggestions here:

http://www.tiif.de/thread.php?threadid=507&sid=bf09bac9978aca31f713d8d4f7e3eb46

We don't know the casting numbers on the top of the mantlet. Detailed factory records like that don't tend to survive the years. All we can do is look at the surviving tanks. There is one early survivor that has a "22" there; these Initial Tigers were probably in single digits.

The Tigers were effective participants in the struggle to maintain the siege of Leningrad, but the terrain was swamp and forest, completely unsuitable for them. The first combat loss was in September.

The remaining 8 Tigers were used in small engagements along the front for many weeks. They got some modifications as winter came in:

  • They were painted in the whitewash camouflage
  • some crews swapped around tracks so they wouldn't have to carry different kinds of spares
  • extensions were put on the exhausts because they spouted flame that the Russians could see
  • Tiger 100 was reportedly holed in the left side of the turret. Two custom bins were added and the old Pz3 bin was cut off. Somebody claims that the left bin was half full of concrete to cover the hole.

The decal scheme for "100" is of course from this time. This was the company commander's vehicle. If we could read those little turret numbers in the photos, there would be a lot more decal options in the kit; in fact, I ensured that there are enough digits on the sheet to cover almost any of the Tigers if more photos should appear on Ebay.

The Russians launched a major attack on 12 January and the Tigers were committed the next day. After a week of bitter fighting around Sinjawino, one Tiger had been destroyed by the enemy, two captured, and two blown up by the Germans after they broke down. The tank troops eventually had to leave their vehicles and fight their way out on foot. The Russians broke through to relieve Leningrad on the 18th January.

Only 3 Tigers now remained, and another was lost on 31 January. Three new ones arrived in February; they were differently equipped and this kit can't build them.

The Tigers were then repainted in whitewash and numbered 1 to 5. The decal scheme for '3' is from this period; the tank had formerly been "122". You can see photos of this period on this page, under "Anfang 1943".

Hey Bryden,

This is great! Thankyou for taking the time to type all of this out for me - it's perfect Yes

It's nice to know that I definately won't have to look at the instructions as the tank MUST be done exactly this way! It'll be good to be able to be a little flexible.

I'll be starting work on this kit next weekend and will be keeping a proper blog going on the the group build pages but will put a few photos on here too occasionally.

Thanks again for being so thorough buddy!

Take care,

Ben Toast

If it helps you to swap things around; the photos of 100 give the impression that it got the side bins when it was still grey. And I think the exhaust pipe extensions came after the camouflage.

Looking forward to what you do with this one.

Hey Bill!

I've been uhhming and ahhing all day trying to decide but I'm going for the side bins on Tiger 100.

You did a great job of your matey and your build guide will really help me when it comes down to assembly etc.

I'm going to go for an unmasked cammo scheme on this one and really try to make it a looker.

I hope you don't mind me 'borrowing' one of your build logs (again) to help me along! We obviously have the same taste in armour - anything German and ideally Eastern Front and I'm game!

Thanks buddy and take care matey,

Ben,

No problem at all with you using one of my build logs, that's what they are there for! Just be aware the build log is for kit #6252 so may not be exactly the same in some respects as your kit. Have fun with the project! Beer

Hi Bill,

I understand that I'm missing the Magic Tracks, metal barrel and bucket and other bits that your kit had but I've gained DS tracks (which I like for single row wheeled armour like Tigers/Panthers etc) and some nice PE grills and other things which I'm not sure of.

I don't know what to do re the barrel - I might have to go AM for that.

It's not so much 'how' you assembled your kit which I'm interested in but in what order and what you left off for painting etc. VERY helpful!

All the best,

Ben Toast

Hi guys,

A very quick question re my Tiger I:

1) I've been studying the instructions in readiness for commencing assembly next weekend. It comes complete with PE grills for the rear deck to go over the larger plastic grills - I haven't really seen these used on any persons build before - should I use them or is it totally optional?

Also, there seems to be an optional (?) step where you asemble two rear pieces that fit over the rear grills and these slope upwards towards the back of the Tiger I. On either side is a supporting piece of angular PE to make the cover slanted then the sloped cover sits on top?

Any ideas?

All the best,

Ben Toast

Ben:

1) Photographs are often unhelpful, but it seems that these metal grilles were used on all Tigers in service. We can see them in photos of "100".

2) these are actually internal air ducts.

Hinksy, the mesh grills were added to keep out any foriegn objects, for example grenades ,leaves and other items that could foul the movement of air to cool the radiators. These I made myself.

Congratulations to your BD and to a great kit.
This is a GREAT kit.
I would not worry to much about the lack of a turned barrel, give the supplied one a try and decide after that.
In fact, I don't think there is anything you would need to add if you are going by the options provided, even the horse shoe for # 100 is provided.

Very Best Regards
Johan

Cheers Gregg, David and Johan,

That clears that up! It seems I was looking at the rear deck ducts and seeing them (in 3D obviously) as sticking upwards above the deck! I now realise the picture shows the rear deck as upside down but it's not indicated. I should have realised tbh.

Boy do I feel stupid! Embarrassed

LOL!

Nice mesh btw Greg - would all early Tigers have been released with these grills fitted? They are shown as optional?

Thanks guys,

Ben Toast

Hinksy,I would dare say that the grills may very well have been added by the maintenance sections with the recieving units,as well as any other authorized field mods.Oh and thanks.David Byrdens site is very good if you havent already been there.

The grilles on "100" look exactly the same as all the other ones on later Tigers. Bearing in mind that "100" was the eighth of ninth Tiger to be delivered to the Army, I think these were factory fittings.

Cheers Andy and Happy Belated Birthday Scott!

I'm going to be painting this in a similar way to the the Panzer III N (Leningrad) that I've just finished for Andys Panzer III GB.

I'm going to be laying the white down a little patchier and rough looking and the white will be very thinned to help with the pre-shade.

I'll be starting this weekend so watch out! I'm really going to take my time on this as I'm going for perfection so this will stretch well into 2012 - it's a big old kit anyway.

After that I think I'd better start that Dragon Hybrid Firefly that I got for last Christmas! Now that kit IS a beast!

Cheers chaps,

Yeah!

Cheers Andy - fun could be had with these lovely ladies! Stick out tongue

I particularly like the one second in on the left - mmmmm!

Anyway, Tiger I build commences this weekend. I have the paints, the tools, the skill (maybe) to make one nice Tiger and my cabinet will certainly look a lot better with a 1/35 Dragon Tiger taking centre stage!

I'm going with the same Leningrad Winter scheme as I used on my Panzer III N for the GB but this time it will be far rougher and the white applied in a less 'structured' fashion and the white will definately be more thinned to help with the pre-shade effect.

I'm sticking with the DS Tracks as I like them but I think an £8 RB Barrel will be required to finish it off nicely - at that price a plastic barrel with a silly spring can be left out of the build! Oh - a Quickwheel Mask too. That will be very handy!

Cheers guys and take care,

Ben Toast
