Are these markings realistic?
Posted by castelnuovo on Wednesday, November 16, 2011 4:30 PM

Gentlemen,

I have just received Tamiyas kit for a German 8 tonne truck with a four barrel AA gun. The four barrels have 3 white strips on them, I guess it is for number of aircraft shot down.

The questions are:

1. They shot down 3 aircrafts

2. They shot down 12 aircrafts (3 stripes x 4 barrels=12)

3. The markings are not realistic because of the high rate of fire the barrels would heat up and the paint would burn away.

If the correct answer is #3, where did they then put the victory stripes?

Cheers...

Considering how fast the barrels wore out and had to be changed out, I don't consider kill rings on Flak guns other than 88s to be very realistic. Crews instead usually kept score (when they did at all) on the gun splinter shield instead. HTH!

There are numerous pics of the kill rings on the barrels of these M0J0's...also on the shield...sometimes they were put on only one barrel, other times, all of them.  Either way the number of "kills" would NOT be multiplied by yhe number of barrels marked...
