Year Around Group Builds?
Posted by tigerman on Saturday, January 31, 2004 6:14 PM
Brainstorm. Ouch it hurt! I was thinking since there is so much interest in Group Builds, why not have say one every 2-3 months? Two months might have worked for the Panther, but many have not finished. I can think of many, such as a SPG, or armored car, halftrack, Kingtiger(now that Dragon released theirs, there is much interest in this kit), Russian tank, British tank, modern tank, etc. Pretty limitless. I still find it a great motivator. Of course I haven't figured out who would run the show, I suppose volunteers with time could start one. A good idea or just fantasy?

first i was hoping you meant "take a year to finnish the group build

its a great idea but how about different things like Normandy or Berlin 1945
or opperations like Market Garden

and how long should the group build be a sticky ???? we dont want to clog the boards up

Needless to say, I haven't thought of everything, that's why we have smart forum members to iron out details. I like the theme (Normandy, etc...) idea. Perhaps we could vote and check the interest that way. As far as being a sticky, well the Tiger builds are still a sticky, when do they expire so to speak? Thought it might be neat to have a build every season of the year. We can always modify this plan if there is enough interest. Keep posting your thoughts.

i think that's a fantastic idea, and if anything would help get us out of the group build log jam like we (i!!) have now...panther just finishing...shermie, and now the towed gun...i'm drowning in my own group build!!! (ohhh!)
if the forums are getting clogged then maybe a separate "sub-forum"? i'm sure we can all figure soemthing out.
i really like the themed idea though!!Cool [8D]

Should of posted this on the 'Fun Weekend build' thread. Sorry!

Heck, it takes me two days just to remove all the parts from the sprue, let alone actually build anything!

I like the idea of having seasonal group builds with respect to historical events during that time. We could choose major events and have Pacific and/or European battle builds. And the other forums for aircraft and ships could synchronize similiar builds with the same event(s). I guess I'm reaching!

Thats one problem going on now, too many and too close together. I know that wasn't the intention when they started. I like the motivation aspect. I think the holiday period wrecked havoc with the Panther build. Of course I ran into a few unexpected problems along the way. Themed builds certainally encompass more subjects. Maybe we could split the builds equally between themed and subject.

Jon can you elaborate on your joint build idea with the flyboys?

i jusy thought of say Normandy with all the Panthers, Tigers,Shermans armour invoved in the battle for the hedgerows then with the Aircraft the same era with invasion stripes and maybe ships like HMS Belfast if the floaters want to take part?
also the Figyres and Dios could join???

it might even make the Magazine?? but maybe just once a year and the rest of the time normall builds

Personally, the group builds have given me the motivation to get in and finish something. I tend to do a lot of scratchbuilding to improve kit parts or interiors but it takes so long that I have many unfinished projects, due to the desire to start something new.

The rolling group build projects should cure me of my bad habits, and I would love to see the concept become a reality here.

I think that's a good idea, Tigerman. Group builds somehow give focus to modelers and the motiviation to start and finish a project. I mean, without some sort of motiviation we tend to loss concentration on certain projects with all these new releases coming out.

I like the idea of continuing group builds, people can join or skip at their discretion. The suggestion of "Themed" and "Subject" based builds is a good one and a lot of people could join two builds with one kit to reduce cost if necessary. I also suggest an "OOB" build for those with limited funds or those that just want to do something simple. The OOB build would also give those of us with experiance a chance to offer encouragement and advice, in "real time", for those just beginning in this fine hobby.
If we are going to do this I think a "Group Builds" forum may be appropriate.

A Group Build forum isn't a bad idea Derek, especially if we want to include say the flyboys or floaters (Jon's term) in a build. LOL Hey more the merrier.

I agree with you Dwight, it does help to maintain the focus and desire to finish a kit. Hey if your ambitious enough, you might squeeze two kits out of a build, especially if the timeframe is three months. Perhaps themed builds could be longer to allow for diorama builds as well.
