Academy 1/35 M151A1C 48 hour build- many pics
Posted by stikpusher on Monday, November 21, 2011 2:45 PM

I cobbled this thing together for the Weekend Madness IV Group Build. Any kit, just build and finish it in a 48 hour time span. This kit was a perfect candidate. The jeep itself was built in about 6 hours, and the gun took another hour or so. I mixed Tamiya Olive Drab and Semi Gloss Black at about a 10:7 ratio to replicate the Dark Olive Drab used on US Army vehicles in Vietnam. Seats were painted Humbrol OD 155, and the    VRC-46 radio was painted with Gunze OD #2. I painted the M40 Recoilless rifle with Humbrol buffable metallic Gun Metal (not 56). Straight out of the tin and without buffing, that stuff gives a great look for anadozied or parkerized weapons. The kit decals had extremely poor adhesion and the hood star was pretty much impervious to Micro Sol and Solvaset. I endedup partially concealing that little beastie under a piece of Verlinden resin stowage. Aside from the Verlinden stowage the only add on was a stretched sprue antenna for the -46. Weathering done with Mig Pigments Vietnam Earth

With the concealing stowageWink gotta love armor!

and with my last vehicle completed, Tamiya's UE Carrier

comments and critiques welcome (please keep in mind this build had a 48hour time limit)

Nothing like a quick 48-hour effort to keep you on your toes! I like the look, the recoiless rifle looks nice and mean. Sorry to hear the decals were tough to deal with...if they didn't respond to Solvaset then they weren't going to respond to anything. Propeller

OH....very nice....nothing like a nice quick build.....sometimes you want to sip a beer, sometimes you need to swallow a quick shot!

I know the answer but...the parkerized finish look good on the RR but compared to the jeep it is soooo clean....I know, it was covered!! WOW....you let the RT524 get sooo dusty, that had to be hard and bring back memories.

Nice work

Thanks guys.

I need to make a handmike for the -524. They are simple to scratch... and yes the dusty 524 was very memory based (of course I have never been close to Vietnam than Honshu and Hokkaido, but I can set up a 524 in a VRC-46, 47 or 48 in my sleep)

I like that analogy Redleg... sipping or a shooterDrinks

So along with the handmike you think a bit of dust of the Gun?

Stick - I don't think they would have a complete weapon cover.....as I remember on the Ontos, the cover is the back end covering the breech and the .50 cal spotter. Just looking at the jeep with all the dust and the perfectly clean RR  Confused

Now if there was a cover on the ground next to it or drapped on the front seat, that could explain things.

With that said, that is my opinion....even with nothing else it is a great build and sometimes it is best to just move on!!

Stik, thanks for making my decision this morning harder. I have on my bench an AV-8B Harrier and the M151A2 from Tamiya I snatched from my LHS 2 days ago. Still thinking which one I will go first and you show this awesome build here.

Thanks for sharing, love the weathering. Was it airbrushed or powdered?

Great work Stik!  48 hours?  How many cups of coffee did you drink for this? Stick out tongue  Dig the red clay dirt all over the jeep.  I lived in NC outside Raleigh for 8 years where soil was red and they goes everywhere even inside my car.

DP, Coffee was my nemesis here, otherwise I would have gotten two jeeps builtSurprise I drank way too much coffee at the Friday nite IPMS meeting the nite before and as a result did not drop off to sleep until around 5 am Saturday morning...Indifferent woke up midday Saturday having slept thru a LOT of valuable daylight...the place that hosts the meeting (La Quita Inn) has some strong stuff! Too bad they are not in my work area when I go get my evening coffee to see me thru the end of shift.... Actually once the thing was all built by Saturday evening, the painting was done at a relaxed pace on Sunday and finishing touches Monday morning.

El Taino I have a soft spot in my heart for that Tamiya M151A2 for two reasons: 1) that was my first "adult" model purchase & build which I bought upon arrival at Ft Polk after being assigned to 5th ID in 1984 as an 18 year old Private fresh out of Benning; and 2) The real one is what I learned to drive a stick shift on, prepping for REFOGER 84... I say build the Jeep!  Oh yes, the weatheirng was done with Mig Pigments.

I still have mine (painted with the old Pactra Military Enamels set)

Thanks Stik, a little late but finally the kit became WIP last night. Not bad for $11.50 (IMO).

I was wondering is there such thing as a 1/35 army photographer figure or if I should go the scratch build route which I don't know nothing.

Looks good for a short time.  Maybe add some more dust to the RR and the front headlight areas?

A TOW Gun Jeep!HeartHeartHeart Oh yes, very nice! "BACKBLAST AREA CLEAR! ARMING LEVER UP!"

But as far as creating a GI photographer, youre gonna have to create one on your own. I dont know of any similar figure in styrene, resin, or white metal.  Its not too hard to do, ifyou have a figure in a similar position. Fine tuning arms the position of and legs is easy. And making a camera from strip and tube plastic or sprue should not be too difficult.

Hello!

Nice build, especially for such a short time. Good thing you covered the hood star, it was placed wrong way around anyhow Oops. I know the instructions point it out this way - I mean  - like HvH always says - some day, somewhere, some private will prove you wrong, but at least since 1956 the Technical Bulletins specify the National Star on horizontal surfaces should point FORWARD. That's just for people who want to build a similar vehicle in the future. But enough about that - good luck with your future builds and have a nice day

Thanks for the heads up PawelYes I will try to remember it when I build my standard 151A1 sometime in the near future. and as was said, there is always a Private who did not read the TO when the vehicle gets tothe paint racck... (Whistling REFORGER '84 and I plead the 5th and a hangover...)

There are plastic figures out there holding binoculars wouldn't be too hard to scratch a 110 camera with flash cube stack as that was a common camera in the 70's and 80's and you can add a Nikkon hanging on a strap from the neck and have a lense bag sitting in the bed of the 151.
