More WIP on the Academy M998 HMMWV kit. I'm trying to attain the look my truck had as one that was originally NATO 3-color but had endured countless repaints of desert sand after field exercises, NTC deployments, a trip to Desert Storm and a return trip to Kuwait in 1992. Even after all those repaints, the sand always came off after trips to the wash rack and there were always missed paint spots where the paint booth crew never bothered to reach.

I've been rather lazy working on this truck and lost interest when I joined a couple of other GBs and started building my more usual 1/72 scale armor. I still haven't decided on whether or not to use the resin wheels. The vinyl tires look to have a seam where the injected vinyl meets opposite of the sprue attachment point. I have a feeling the tires will split at this spot in the future.

My truck had the older Wrangler tires. I found a couple sets I had in my AFV Club HMMWV box.

Rob, I does it use the old Wrangler R/T or MT?

Yep....the M998 was in my past too and it is also sitting on the shelf. Curious to see what you do with it or are you going OOB?

It'll be OOB until I get a set of resin wheels for it. I don't trust non-Tamiya vinyl tires for the duration and would rather replace them than risk the vinyl melting my model. I just haven't gotten around to looking for a set yet.

I too bounced around in one of those at the NTC on numerous occasions. Looking forward to your build.

Here's a photo of my Academy M998 that I bought in 1995, tinkered with a little and stuffed back into a box until stumbling across it in late summer. At the time, it was the only 2 door soft top kit available and was the same type I had as a BMO of an armor battalion.

While my truck had full canvas troop cover and such, when we went to the NTC or into the field at hood, we took the canvas off and left the doors at the motor pool. We left the roof on so we didn't get sunbaked and the radios could stay cooler or drier in the sun or rain. I haven't decided whether or not to update the radios to SINCGARS or leave the 12-series radios as the kit comes with.

Lots of seams and circular knock out marks. I covered the ones that would be visible. I noticed that the driver's compartment comes with pre-molded gas, brake and clutch pedal details, although the HMMWV has automatic transmission. I'll scrape the clutch pedal away before I install seats and dashboard. The hood is just set in place for right now and not glued. It took some adjusting to get it to sit even with the bumper & frame.

I coated the vinyl tires in Future to guard against melting and have not permanently attached them. I do plan on getting a set of resin replacement wheels. Until I do, I usually roll the vinyl tires in a small lid filled with Future, pluck them out and set them on a piece of non-porous cardboard like a piece of old cereal box. I also find it easier to attempt to paint the acrylic coated tires and not risk getting the tires sticky from a chemical reaction with the paint.

Here's a more recent photo after doing some work this weekend.
