M4 Sherman--Where Do Expended Shells Go?
Posted by fificat on Friday, December 23, 2011 1:10 PM

I know in the M42 40mm AA Duster, expended shells go down a chute and out the bottom of the hull.  But, if you are banging away a lot in a M4 Sherman, is there a chute the expended hot shells are thrown down, or do they just pile up in the fighting space until you get a chance much later to pop the top and throw them out?

I would think this would be critical in extended battles and operations to not be falling over expended shells.  I sure would not want to be the guy told to pop the top and dump out the shells in a hot situation.

Any info from those in the know??

There's a small square/rectangular armored hatch on the turret side that could be used to throw shells out of the turret while minimizing exposure. The other alternative was to place expended shells back into the racks as new ammo was pulled out and used. All depended on the circumstances and the nature of their engagement.

In addition, a number of the 75 mm turrets had the pistol port welded shut, armored over, or not cast into the turret.
