I Picked up a Lovely 1975 Tamiya Marder II Yesterday!

Hi folks,

I went into my LHS yesterday to order a new Tamiya kit and spotted a little display of freshly boxed 1/35 Tamiya kits with "'70s Tamiya Miniature Masterpiece Models; on the front. I was immediately taken by the 'Coal Thief' Marder II.

I haven't built a Panzer II before and Andy Deafpanzers superb Marder II made me snap this one up! Of course there the usual oddidities like a hole in the bottom where the'on/off' switch goes and room inside the covered chassis for two AA batteries! There are more EP holes than normal too but thy aren't too bad.

The figures are pretty good and nicely detailed with crisp facial details which I didn't expect!

It has a new instruction booklet and plenty of scope for scratching extra detail so I'm going to enjoy this build!

Have any of you guys built this original Marder II?

All the best,

Ben Toast

Yes, I have built two of them.  The first was back in 1975, when it first appeared.  It was back when Tamiya ruled the armor world.  Of course back then, I don't recall anyone being concerned about the underside of tank models.  That was nutty if you were.  Lovely kit.  I think I built it as Coal Thief.   It survived until the late 80's and then it became a donor kit for various parts.  I built another in the mid 90's, and is still around.  A couple of years ago I built the new Dragon kit.  So I have both of them together for comparisons sake.  Dragon's is a far better kit for detail.  I still have 2 of the Tamiya kits in the stash, and I tell myself that I  will build them sometime.

Have fun with it

Yes I built one back in the late 80s. One of my first airbrushed camo jobs on armor. It is really a beautiful kit. Out Of Box it builds up just fine, and if you must replace something on it, I would suggest the tracks. Definitely one of their better early kits. EnjoyWink

I agree Stik,

It looks like it should build up perfectly OOB. I've noted that it has no radio - just an empty radio rack - so I'm going to salvage my radio from my Dragon Marder III M that never was and try and use them instead.

Tracks are definately going to have to go - I'll see what replacements I can find as I'd prefer not to fork out out £28 on Friuls - the kit was a lot cheaper than that!

The figures are surprisingly good and the facial details are crisp and should be ok to paint - as you know know I SUCK at figure painting!

The saw that is mounted on the external wall will need to be replaced by a scratched one as the kit one has no teeth and looks awful!

Watch this space, I'll be building her soon!

All the best,

Ben Toast

Oh geez...talk about nostalgia.  I built that kit years ago.  I think I paid $8.95 for it.
