Sturmgeschutz Sdkfz167
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, February 1, 2004 9:30 PM
hello darksiders, i bought an academy sturmgeschutz sdkfz 167, 75mm stuk 40L/48 gun. but when i opened it, the instructions manual says "sturmgeschutz sdkfz 163 20mm.

is there a difference? the painting scheme on the manual is different too. it's a desert yellow and olive green camouflage, but in the box, there are dots on the camo. when i bought the kit, it's still sealed on its plastic wrapper. is this a factory error? what is the real color of the tank?

i'll post some pics later before i paint them. thanks!

Sorry, I'm not famiiar with Academy's kit, but it sounds like you have the wrong instructions. I can't nail down SDKZ 167 except it looks like the Mobelwagen which would explain the 20mm.

i followed the instructions and it's going good. it looks the same with the box, with some errors on the sprocket though. my only problem is the color and...what tank is it? 167 or 163? i guess i'll just call it achtung baby. he he

Well I have no idea what I'm thinking Garry. Near as I can tell they are both the same. As I'm looking up the SDKZ #'s up in my book, it doesn't list them for the Mobelwagen. It just fell in sequence. I have no idea what that 20mm means. Sorry for misleading you. Sounds like you got it under control. Good luck.

I would paint it in the traditional three color scheme with, dunkelgelb, olivgrun, and redbraune.

Garry,

Here's a paragraph taken from an article on Stug's. This may explain something about the discrepancy about the tank designation on the box and on the manual. From this it can be said that the official designation was 167 but others applied the number 163. So this designations (167 and 163) could very well be used for the same vehicle.

In December of 1943, Stug IV was introduced, it was essentially a slightly modified Stug III superstructure (such as extended driver's compartment) mounted on Panzer IV chassis. From December of 1943 to March of 1945, 1139 such "hybrids" were produced by Krupp-Gruson at Magdeburg (chassis number 89324 to 89382 and 100001 to unknown). Stug IV (Sd.Kfz.167) was armed with 75mm StuK 40 L/48 gun mounted in cast "saukopf" mantlet. It was operated by 4 men crew. Majority was issued in companies to infantry divisions with few exceptions. Some source apply designation Sd.Kfz.163 to Stug IV.
