Tamiya 1/35 Tiger I WIP *update*

I used some of this Verlinden set a few years agon, but can't remember much about it. Those bags you are asking about are for the inside, they are for holding the MG ammo. I am not sure on those brass parts, but i am sure they don't go on the side skirts. Yes, those are meant to be buckets.

There resin sets are difficult to work with. I also added there engine set to mine and that didn't fit very well. And i almost fitted there interior until i realised it was for an Early production tank, i had the tamiya Mid.

                             Nice work on the zimmerit so far 101stAirborne,any scratch work that will save you the expense of aftermarket stuff is good. Seeing what you have scratched so far I think for looking through a hatch will be just fine. As for the q's,the little P.E. parts are the supports/braces for each fender section solder or glue them into place.The bags are Gurtsaches,I know my spelling is incorrect ,these bags as mentioned before are M.G. ammo. Verlinden instructions suck,oops can I say that? Anyway ,if you can make use of anything in the verlinden package ,congrats. Am I bashing?Do you have any reference material?I can send you a turret layout pic if you would like but as I said you've got it pretty good.

Hey thanks for the help guys it clears up many questions. But with answers comes more questions. Are those bags supposed to be inside the turret? For holding the ammo for the MG in there or just as stowage?

No it is not a crime to say Verlinden sucks because I have had bad experiences with them before and it is no surprise that this is another one of those experiences. I have bought several kits from them and they always have missing pieces. 

Detailfreak - I am from the twin cities. I have entered several local competitions and national competitons. Maybe I have seen you at one of them?

A fine piece of Scratching and the Zim looks real good I've done one piece of Milliput Zim work and that was on a 1/48 Tamiya StuG III G. I really enjoyed that and hope to do it again.

I do remember why I despise PE now and why I have such respect for those who build such amazing parts from it I wish I could help buddy but grilles and tool clamps are as far as I go where PE is concerned. I'm getting better but it's a nightmare when all the pieces start pinging everywhere and sticking to your tools!

Ryan, i know some of those bags go in the hull, to the right of the Radio operator/hull MG gunner. I have seen cutaways of Tigers, and as far as i recall, none went in the turret, though i am not 100% sure on that.

The Academy that 70gtvert built earlier this week has a cutaway drawing I could send you for reference.
The ammo pouches go onto the side wall of the turret wall next to the MG, on the side wall next to the radio operator (right front) and on the fire wall to the engine. This is the ammo for the turret mounted AA MG which also had its stowage position at the fire wall.

I have no clue what the rest of the parts are.

A little update. I didn't get much more done on it but still a little progress. I cut the hatch that goes on the back of the turret off of it's hinges because I wanted to have that hatch open. I also did a little work on the figures that I am going to have on the inside of the tank. 

For the tank commander figure I had to remove the straps from this figure's torso

I had to steal a commanders had from this figure...

...and put it on the other figures head.

The figure is from Tamiya's Kubelwagen set

This is a figure from a dragon kit which I did not modify at all. 

Here is what they will look like once in place in the tank. They are far from finished and may need a some dullcote!

I have another question. Does anyone know a Tiger unit that would have fought against the American GI's in France in 1944 after the D-day invasion? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Or if anyone knows a good book that has this information in it.

For Christmas I got Tamiya's 1/35 scale Tiger I late version with a crew set of eight included. I have a diorama plan for it but for now I am just working on the Tiger. I need to have an interior for the turret because I will have some of the hatches open. I decided to scratch build the interior because I enjoy scratch building and I already spent enough money on buying a turned metal barrel from Lion Roar and a details set from Verlinden and brass shell casings from AFV club. I do not usually buy after market stuff because it is so expensive but I decided to spoil my self this time!

I think these are supposed to go on the side skirt armor but I am not sure.

These are the MG ammo bags. The parts he are referring to are above the writing, not below it.

I work at a hobby shop and the plastic model guy, Paul, gave me his fruilmodel tracks for my tiger. I was very happy that he gave them to me, but i have never worked with them before and the package says they contain lead. Is there anything to worry about?

I've never noticed they had lead in them. Will teach me to pay more attention. I don't think they will be a problem unless you plan on seeing what they taist like. I would just make sure you wash your hands after handling them.

Yep, commonly misunderstood fact that Fruils (and all similar white metal products) contain lead and standard precautions should be taken with them in terms of handling and dust (if you drill or grind them for any reason). Same thing goes with the chemicals/products out there used to blacken/age them...they usually contain an acid or similar mildly corrosive substance so careful handling is a must there as well. Lots of nasty stuff around in the hobby these days (can't tell you how many products on my workbench contain the warning that they contain stuff known to the state of California to cause cancer, pregnancy issues, birth defects, etc.)

Nice score on the Friuls, they should be a great addition to your project.

I will have to wash my hands after using them then. I did want to see how they tasted, but I guess i cant do that. I've never worked with fruils before. Any tips?

I love em. I would replace every kits tracks, even the magic ones, if they were not so damn expensive.

Just make sure the holes are clear before you try putting each link together. Sometimes a hole can be blocked. take your time, i tend to do them in sections, the put sections together. Someone, i think bill, came up with a great jig. I haven't tried it yet as i haven't had a chance.

Nice process on your Tiger.  I did Friulmodel tracks recently.  Learned a great tip from a friend here I think it was Hinksy.  Instead of using the set supplied wiring, use dress pins.  It made my job alot easier that I was able to assemble one side of track in less than 45 minutes.  No cleaning up necessary...

I didn't use CA but I will next time to make sure the pins stay inside.

It's been a little while since I posted an update because I was busy with school and I didn't get much done, but I had some time this weekend so I got a little more done.

A weathered the interior a little, or maybe a lot but most of it will be hidden so it doesn't have to looke perfect.

That should help a lot because I was having trouble with the kit supplied wire falling out. Do the pins need glue or do they stay in there tight enough because I know at my hobby shop they have flexible CA. I'm glad I won't have to do any cleaning out, that will save a lot of time. Thank you!

I bought couple of dress pins in different sizes.  I think I used 35mm and it worked like a charm.  50mm was too thick I recall.  35mm was little tight so I didn't use CA at all.  But I realize after moving them around the pins may move little.  A box of dress pins was like only $2 at Hobby Lobby for 250 pieces.

If I had to do it again, I would use CA... tip the head of pin into the pool of CA before inserting into the links.  Then use a good wire cutter to cut the rest of pins off, be sure to wear safety goggles because they go off flying!

What a nice looking build - coming on very well!

The interior and Zim are both excellent.

I love Friuls and Magic Tracks. If, like Andy, you can find dress pins that are just tight enough then no CA should be needed unless the odd one is a bit loose.

I can't find these pins so I use the Friul wire for detailing my builds as it's a perfect size but too flimsy to assemble Friul links. Instead I use .35mm(?) Copper wire which has a bigger diameter and doesn't bend as easily. Just take your time and assemble links of ten or fifteen at a time; if you don't you'll have a wonky track length. Just fix all the rows of 10-15 x links together at the end.

I use a tiny dab of CA Gel applied with a toothpick or pin to seal the end of each hole but if you are planning to use a chemical blacken-it treatment be careful as it doesn't like CA. The UK Blak-Trak I use doesn't anyway, it won't touch any area with CA on.
