Weight limit for Dragon Wagon?
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, February 2, 2004 12:52 PM
Could the Dragon wagon haul a Tiger I? A Tiger II? A Jagdtiger?

How about a Maus? Tongue [:P]

I'm considering building a very late Panther G over the summer, once my towed gun project is done, and it might also convince me to finally build up the Dragon Wagon I've had in the basement since it came out.

I read where the weight limit for the trailer was like 40 tons or something, but it wasn't uncommon for us yanks to put twice that on it. Problem with it is I don't think a load like your talkin would actually fit on it. Panther yes... Tiger I and up...???????? I don't think so but then what do I know.... Now you could have them dragging such a load sans the trailer... I would doubt not a maus though.... Show it with the tracks shucked... which was pretty common ... to save weight and ease towablitiy...

Just my two cents..

According to the specs I have on it, capacity for the trailer was 36.28 tons. But these specs were certainly stretched during the war. I've seen pics of them carrying Panthers so the Jagdpanther probably would be ok ..... anything bigger and I would be a little worried.

It could handle the Pershing, so anything in the 45 ton class is a go as far as I'm concerned.

But that does bring up a rather obvious question..........

Just how did they transport the Tiger I's, Tiger II's and Jagdtigers they captured?

Does anyone know??????

I've seen pics of the Brits using their transporters and what they did was tear the vehicle down a bit ... remove the turret, off with the tracks .... lots of weight savings there.

Not a lot of pictures to work with; recovery vehicles just aren't sexy except to us old Ordnance folks ... I have DW, wreckers, TRV, etc, all in build queue.

Anyway, take a look at Allied-Axis Photo Journal Issue 3, which has bulk of issue on the DW. You might find the pictures of the tractor towing a Panther to be of interest. The one with Panther loaded is postwar placing Panther on target range ....

Oops; forgot The Military Machine, "Dragon Wagon" by Jochen Vollert which has lots of detail shots & following limits:
M15 trailer about 20,000 lb
M15A1 90,000 lb <<-- kit
M15A2 100,000 lb

Both refs are great. Another is TM 9-767 reprint which I got from Portrayal Press.
