ID this Truck?--Answer Ford GTB aka Burma Jeep
Posted by wbill76 on Friday, January 13, 2012 5:19 PM

While out walking my dog this afternoon in the neighborhood I came across this truck parked on the street. It's not a type I've seen before but looks WW2 era and has had some modifications to make it street legal in Texas...so I thought it would be interesting to see if anyone here can ID what it is? Pics were taken with my cell phone camera and I had a dog on a leash so couldn't exactly get a full set of walk-arounds...but it's apparently a Ford product (or at least has a Ford tailgate! Wink ). Anyone able to ID this for me?

Looks British...looks Beford-ish...saw a bunch of these in the Bridgehead near Dunkirk after the Tommies swam the channel in '40...

Thanks Bronto! A quick Google search yielded this link: http://ewarbirds.org/vehicles/1943fordburmajeep.html

AKA the "Burma Jeep"...learned something new about US trucks in the process. Much appreciated! Beer

Manny,

That was my first thought as well...that squashed nose and cramped cabin instantly made me think it was British but the "Ford" tailgate was a clue otherwise (unless of course it was a replacement or red herring...but Bronto's info proves differently).

Definitely a squat ugly looking thing...designed with function over form in mind for sure.

I thought the same thing TD...the fact that it mostly saw service with the Navy/Marines and in the Pacific theater (including Burma) may have something to do with that.

My mother-in-Law is cleaning up her ranch, is looking to sell off some old vehicles and has one of these Ford GTB Burma Jeeps.

Please let me know if anyone is interested in buying this vehicle. I posted some pictures on Photobucket. Below is the link.
