Another unusual subject...
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, February 3, 2004 3:16 AM
This is the time of a Camionetta SPA Mod. 42, in service with the italian police during the 50s. This vehicle is derived from the Camionetta "Sahariana" that was used in North Africa during WWII. The difference is that the canisters racks on the sides have been replaced with stowage boxes. The Camionetta Mod. 42 also fought in Italy immediately after the armistice in 1943.

The kit is a resin one from Crielmodel and is built fairly out of the box. I've just scratchbuilt the windscreen, the exaust and the Breda 20 barrel. Decals are sold as a separated item.
As usual comments and critics are most welcome.
Ciao

How many times did the gunner smack the driver in the head with a gun barrel? Really cool, I wish I had one to drive around town.

Very nice Fabio! That is an unusual subject for sure and well done. I thought it was a firetruck when then the pics first started loading!! Tongue [:P] No white circle on the side?? Wink [;)]

You did a great job on the weathering, very subtle. The detail really pops out at you. Big Smile [:D]

Fabio,
Was it four wheel drive or just rear wheel drive? That is cooler looking than the VW Thing. A question is the red color for the police, like the green/white for the german polizi?

Great looking piece Fabio. I've seen pics of a Staghound in the same colours as this. Are you considering doing a companion piece?

Thanks for sharing with us.
As always a pleasure.
Happy Modelling and God Bless Robert

First of all I'd like to thank everybody for the kind words. I'm happy that this subject interested quite a bit of people. What I can say is that it went together beautifully, there were no air bubbles at all and the flash to remove it's minimum. It can be also be painted in the Italian Army colours in a sand or sand/green camo.
What really impressed me is that it's a kit that also a beginner can put together without problems!

QUOTE: Was it four wheel drive or just rear wheel drive?

It's derived from the AB41 chassis who was 4 wheel drive/steering. By the way for economic reasons it was decided to remove these features and it was just a
rear drive. If someone is interested in doing it the color is seven parts of Humbrol 20 and one of white.

QUOTE: I've seen pics of a Staghound in the same colours as this. Are you considering doing a companion piece?

Robert, you know that I'm building almost exclusively Italian Cavalry subjects. This was an exception because the Crielmodel's owner sent one over to me to be built and painted to be shown at his shop when ready. This is the first non Cavalry subject in 10 years or so!
I've got on my shelf an Accurate Armour T17E1 "Staghound" that will "wear" the Armoured Cavalry School "colours" (in the Cavalry we call colours the markings)

QUOTE: It looks like a fiat armed to the teeth

It actually is!!! SPA was a Fiat owned company specialized in miltary vehicles.

QUOTE: I don't think I've ever seen one of those before

Something very close to this, having canister racks on the sides instead of the stowage boxes, was operational in North Africa, in particular in Tunisia with the Raggruppamento Sahariano during 1943. The vehichle they had was called Camionetta Mod. 42 "Sahariana" and it had more main armament options:
- Breda 20 mm
- 47/32 A/T gun
- Solothurn 20mm A/T rifle
I think the colour confuses a bit...

QUOTE: Italy's answer to the British "desert rats"? Very cool!

Actually it's a derivative of the Autoblindo AB 41 of which shares the chassis and the mechanics. The allied answer to the the AB 41 was the T17E1 "Staghound" that arrived too late to see action in the North Afrivcan desert...

QUOTE: but why is it red?

Don't ask me why, it's the standard colour of Italian Police vehicles immediately after WWII...

And this is the final pic, sitting on its base.

Actually I do almost only "tracked" vehicles. Is only over the last couple of months that "by accident" I bumped into wheeled ones!
