Questions, BMP-1, Soviet T-72 and Merkava IV...
Posted by El Taino on Sunday, January 29, 2012 11:14 AM

'K, folks. I've got an AMT BMP-1 and Soviet T-72 at nearby comic shop for $10 both. They are still wrapped in the original plastic. How good are they in terms of fit and accuracy. Are they worth the time and resources to put them together, or should I display them as collectibles?

Merkava IV: As some of you know, I'm working on Academy's 1/35 Merkava IV LIC. There is an optional machine gun by the cannon that seems to me like it is operated remotely. If this is the case, I believe some wiring is in order and I have wandered the web for reference pictures with no luck. Not all Merkavas have this gun installed and when I see pictures of them with the gun installed, they are taken from a distance. A picture from above would be great. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

since they are AMT the amount of detail probably isnt that good. the moldings are probably pretty thick. most of the AMT car kits are like that so i cant imagine that the armor kits are much different.

The AMT (it is a US boxed Esci kit) BMP-1 was the better of the three available BMP-1 kits that arrived in the late 80s and early 90s. The other two being the DML kit (still available in Zvezda boxing) and the incomplete Lindberg BMP-1U.

The Esci T-72 and the similar "T-74", on the other hand, were based off of grainy Cold War photos and designed before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Its accuracy is suspect and rendered obsolete with the arrival of the Tamiya T-72.

When completed, it does look like a Soviet era tank, but is not a realistic prototype of any particular variant of T-72.

Actually, the AMT tank kits were made by Esci of Italy. While many of the later Esci 1/35 scale armor kits are forgettable (HMMWV, T-72/74, M1/M1A1), their BMP was good and their M60A1 and M60A3 kits are still the best available M60 series kits produced today, surpassing Tamiya and Academy's offerings. Not bad for a company that's been out of business for 20+ years.
