LAV-III wip

pretty much ready for priming. been working on this off and on with other builds. first time working with a lot of pe which usually means doing some pe and taking a break and working on something else and going back later. fun build, lots of pieces. beats putting indy tracks together. i will probably do a faded white UN version just to be different.

From what I can see, you did a super job on the PE... Yes, it can test your patience for sure.

yes it is the trumpeter kit. the pe was tedious at times, primarily the spare tire rack on the rear. that was quite annoying. the right turret bussle side screen was ok but i goofed the left side. filled the gap with some trimmed styrene and it shoulld look ok when painted. everything else was just going slow with sanding and bending and being very careful to work over my work table and be VERY mindful when using tweezers so i didn't lodse anything to the carpet monster. i certainly have a lot more confidence in working with pe after doing this. i did lose a hatch handle but was able to make 2 new ones from wire. i

back on this to finish for my one club quarterly contest end of march. been working the git 'er done group build and finished the 1/72 br-52 locomotive w/ a scratchbuild 2 foot railbed. and working on me-163 for a community project and half a dozen other kits. anyway i a/b with mm white primer but i had it too runny. sprayed it againg using a whole bottle of tamiya white. decided to try more washes this time so the suspension is dirty white followed by steel (which i am not going to use again), dark earth, black. will get un decals on today. the last thing i will do after attaching it to simple base is dust it up, especially the tires, with weathering powder.

they look fine to me. there is NO rubberish seam down the middle that you can't get rid of. washed them with scale black but a lot of that flaked off after all the minipulation. i will be giving them a final coat of dust powder. mounting the wheel was tricky. the axle mounts are felible inside the "holes" for yhe inner hubs. at least they are flexible until you paint them and the paint sticks and the paint thickness. some sanding, cya, and patience fixed that. will put it on a base anyway. i have heard the tires on the SCUD are not correct though i doubt the 20 people who know this will be looking at my model. as i mature in my modeling i have modified my rivet counting concerns as well as obsessing over the exact color, the decals were tricky, small, came off the back quick and easy to fold over. only lost one, the first one. lots of solvset moved them into position.

this the spare tire that hangs in the rear rack. i still need to powder it. will tie it into the rack with rope and clove hitch.

it's finished. the rocks were my second attempt at molding. not as many pieces as the first attempt which ended up as a lot of scree. think i will start on a spanish 8x8 b-1 centauro. think i am into war wheels and trucks

What did you use for the sand base?

Very NICE build! Yes  Like others I'd like to know how you made the sand base... I'd like to give it a shot too.

sorry i didn't respond earlier. i think someone at armorama or a similar site made some detailed comments but these things are deployed all over and you have local variations based on METT. short of a canadian serving in the un force with this vehicle at that particular time i would say it is accurate. probably isn't the best answewr. i did read how us vehicles have more crap hanging on them because us troops have more crap. other country vehicles tend to be "cleaner". it's a fun build. the axles are week but you can smooth out the hub and cya them and get them straight. the pe was strong except for the spare tire rack attachments which were tricky folds and really annoying. the 5gal racks were a breeze, the turret bussles a tad fiddley. i took a lot of breaks with the pe. lots of extra parts and i left all the windscreens because they look dumb. good thing i like warwheels given all the trumpeter soviet/russian and chinese wheels in my stash plus a number of hobbyboss including DANA.

the base. i started with a $2.00 plague from hobby lobby and stained it., primarily to seal it. i glued some wood strips for the raised portion and placed my rocks. the rocks are my second attempt at casting rocks w/ woodland scenes and hydrocal. left it in the mold too long so some broke in half which is better than the first attempt which ended in a lot pf scree. i used modeling clay to make the surface and to secure the rocks and painted it with dark earth (any color close to ground cover. painted the rock gunship grey and washed them w/ light grey. i'm not sure what the ground cover is. it may be real dirt pulverized to a powder. white glus thinned with water and q-tips to place. i did this in a big box lid so i could flip the base and collect the loose stuff that fell off each time. then i went back along the sides w/ a q-tip and stain. here are baseS 1 and 2.
