Speaking in general terms, when working with enamel paints, a primer is not essential. Having said that, I do prefer to lay down a "primer" coat but it is also an enamel paint and not a special primer specifically for that purpose. This is true even when working with metal parts such as an aluminum gun barrel.

As Aces points out, using a primer can produce several benefits depending on what colors you are using beyond just the standard primer application.

Yes I do was using an automotive spray that was makeing a mess in my paint booth so I switched to Model Master gray primer enamel works better than the auto primer. But when thats gone I plan to switch to white primer, white primer will make your finish color more vivid and look better.   ACESES5           Welcome Sign

Do any of you use a primer on your models before spraying on enamel paint?

What about the alumium gun barrel?
