AK 'Burnishing Fluid' Question:
Posted by Hinksy on Friday, February 24, 2012 6:56 AM

Hi guys,

The postman turned up this morning with my Friuls order from my aftermarket supplier Steve who owns a great little company in the UK called 'Armour Models' (if it's Friuls, Resin, Brass or anything from RB like barrels etc. then he'll have it in stock) for my Tiger I '100' wip and also my order from my favourite UK on-line supplier 'Creative Models' who carry absolutely everything else you'll ever need.

I've now got the 'Mirrored' Friuls for my Initial Tiger I (Initial Tiger '#100' had left handed tracks on both sides - I understand the Germans were short of right handed tracks so all they did was fit a set of reversed left handed tracks on the right hand side! They will build up in no time.

From Creative Models I also ordered a 100ml of the AK Odourless Thinners (the smelly stuff gives me the WORST headaches imaginable), some new AK Brown/Blue Panzer Grey Wash in the small bottle and a 100ml bottle of the very new AK Burnishing Fluid for Friul tracks. I usually use Black Track that a friend here in England sells but I wanted to try the AK stuff.

My friend stuff comes in 3 bottles: Stage 1 Degreaser, Stage 2 colouring agent and stage 3 activator. When you put the Friuls into a container of the Acticator and agitate they go rusty brown in 7-10 minutes and look great. His stuff cost's £10 and the AK stuff the same so no difference except Creative Models charge postage-he doesn't. The only limitation is my friends stuff is effective for treating 1 or 2 runs of BIG tracks like King Tiger tracks or it would easily treat 3 sets of Panzer I tracks.

Has anyone used the AK stuff yet? Is it any good? How many times can it be used - just the once? Any advice on using it? The instructions are very 'basic'.

I haven't had time to do a full search as I'm off to work in a minute but one thing I noticed was a message from AK themselves to all people using AK Burnishing Fluid saying the instructions were wrong. You should NOT rinse them in soapy water as written on the instructions, instead use VINEGAR! NO SOAP! I doubt it makes much difference or there would have been uproar!

I doubt it will beat my friends Track Black stuff but I have to try it.

Tiger '100' will be moving forward big time this weekend! I have no work and the whole weekend to myself. No girlfriends or parents around this weekend!

Cheers guys and take care,

Ben Toast

Ben, first off, how you doing bro. !!

Ok the AK fluid is basically the Uschi Van Der Rosten fluid. The trick to using the fluid is that you HAVE to clean the tracks first with viniger. Do not use soap and water at all as this will form a barrier which will not let the tracks rust.

You can do one set of large tracks with the one bottle. The fluid does not have a nasty smell like with some products. I did a set of KT tracks with one bottle. Another important thing is that you should place both left and right runs in the fluid at the same time. Use an old tooth brush and gently scrub the tracks to make sure the fluid gets in the nooks. I didn't clean my tracks right so there were some non treated spots. This isn't a prob for because it will be on a dio.

I'll try to get a pic up of the tracks. I had done a video of this but my pc is screwed up and it won't play. Here is a link t the Uschi site. Alex has a video on there on how to use the fluid.

No I do not have any of their  Burnishing Fluid  but I almost have everything else they have. The AK stuff is some of the best on the market. In fact I'm using the AK Heavy Chipping fluid on one of my tanks right now, I'm taking a beark from the model this minute to post another question and I saw this thread.

Their washes and Streaking effects are top of the line, what used to take me hours to make it look the same it now only takes me minutes for the same effect. I've just about got 75% of the stuff they sell and i'm sticking with it.  No I do NOT work for them.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the feedback Tojo, Scratch and Colonel Yes

My Friuls arrived this morning so I'll make a start this afternoon. I've just finished painting the hubs using the Tiger I (Initial) Quickwheel Mask and all is coming on really well.

First off - for the cleaning of the links can I just use normal table vinegar that you put on your chips (sorry, fries) Wink

I assumed that one bottle would do one set of tracks but the instructions are a bit vague and it doesn't say this so I thought I'd ask. I use a set of Friuls every 4-6 months so I'll see how these hold up against my usual blackening stuff that comes in three bottles and treats 2-3 sets of tracks for the same price. The effect it gives isn't perfect though.

AK have given us some amazing stuff now. Some people may argue that the 'old' arts will soon be lost as they now supply stuff for making hairspray style chipping effects and bottled Filters/Washes etc. I'll always make my own washes still as I like to experiment but their range of streaking effects is just amazing! When you have your method of using it sorted out there's no turning back and you'll be making effects that you never thought possible - like the Colonel I must also have about 75% of all their products, their odourless thinners are great for weathering as they aren't 'harsh' and don't stink to high Heaven giving me the mother of all headaches-even when fully ventilated (I don't work for them either btw)!

I'll get these assembled now and then sit down and watch this tutorial video! Thanks for that Yes

WIP update later on my Tiger I blog!

Take care guys,

Ben Toast

Ben the regular vinegar will work , that's what I used. One bottle, one set.. Here is a link to my burnt out JT. The one side I wanted rusted more than the other so I did this one first and it sat longer.

I too have everything thing that AK has released and I too don't work for them. I do however help out AK USA at shows and doing demo's.

You would be surprised what you can do with these products.

Cheers guys,

I'm fine with the prepping etc. Rob. I'm after confirmation that it's okay to colour the links prior to assembling them? I don't want to ruin them!
