question...my friend just returned from iraq with the 1st armored div. (all the way to baghdad). he gave me 4 cd's with all the pictures he took. among them were several m1a1's both damaged and destroyed. anyways, with the damaged tanks...i noticed in the pics that the 50 cal. and 7.62 were "removed"...i was wondering if this was a direct result of a "retreat" or from enemy scavinging. the same result was on the t-72's & t-55's. although im sure many enemy tanks wern't equipped with the 12.7mm guns. i'd appreciate all your guys wisdom thanks :) i've got a million diorama ideas now :)

Major Rob will most likely know th ereal answer, but I'd guess the small arms were removed by the unit the vehicles belong to. They're expensive and some one is signed for them beside that you don't want them getting into the wrong hands while the tank is waiting to be evacuated.

Those aren't pics that we get to see everyday. I don't think I've seen one destroyed.

I'd love to see those pics. I ran across this picture of a Bradley in Iraq & the caption says that when it breaks they (U.S. Army) take whatever parts from the broken down AFV to be used to repair others.

If those are the tanks i know about , they were damaged (not destroyed)by enemy fire, and due to the high tempo of the American advance it was decided to leave the tanks and destroy what could not be removed quickly ,the crew would have removed the coax and the 50. cal to deny them to the enemy, removed the ammo and other various items like NVG's and GPS's they probably took the apart some of the gun breech too, then they threw in a thermite grenade, or in the case of one of the tanks, one of the other tanks in the company (probably his wingman) shot a round into it to destroy it(imagine being that gunner!). i saw the tank that was destroyed by another M1. none of the crews were killed (I think). i was not in that specific unit, but that is how i understood it. just in case u were wondering the second tank was damaged by some type of sabot round the size of a pencil and is still being investigated by the army, they say they don't know what type of weapon it came from. the gunner of that tank was lucky, his vest was peirced by the round through the back but he was not hurt. there is actually an article about it in the army times. sorry i got long winded

Shock [:O] Whoah! Caught it in the vest! Now that's one to tell the grandkids about! Yeah, I've never seen a destroy Abrams either. I know they are not indestructable [though the next best thing to being there], but the lack of trashed Abrams pics forces you to "imply" that they don't get hit which I know cannot be the case.

Word has it that the russians had snuck some of thier latest RPG 's into iraq shortly before the war , those are capable of taking out an abrams tank ( if hit in the right place of course ) I am sure AT mines took out thier share as well . Regarding the guns ... most likely they were removed to keep them from falling into enemy hands on both accounts .
