Arr...Academy Panzer IV Indi Track Link
Posted by Chrisk-k on Saturday, March 10, 2012 4:48 PM

I bought the track for an Academy Panzer IV. The instruction doesn't mention how many pieces are to be used for each track. The track kit has 224 individual links. So, all I know is the number must be smaller than 112. Does anyone know? If not, I guess the best way is to accurately measure the total length of the vinyl track, divide it by the length of the individual track, and add 1 or 2 more.

I can't help you out with Academy specifically, but I know that for both DML Magic Tracks and MK tracks are about 95 - 98 per side.

Thanks. According to my calculation, each sagging track would need about 98-100. So, I guess I'm in the right ballpark.

You're in the ball park. I think a PZ IV normally has 99 track blocks. I use those tracks often but not always on an Academy kit. I count the number of blocks on the vinyl tracks and add two. I try to get them a little too long because I find it easier to take a block off than to add one.

Yeah I think its between 93-99 links, depends on the kit suspension (Tamiya, Academy, Italeri, Dragon, etc.) and the track links (Academy, Model Kasten, Friulmodell, Dragon, etc).  Also depends on how much track sag you want to depict. Real Pz.IV tracks are "dead" which means that they can be tight or loose, depends on how the track tensioner is adjusted.

Remember, the tracks are designed for not only the Panzer IV, but for use on Panzer IV based vehicles (some which have lengthened hulls and would require more links per side) as well as some Panzer III tanks which would then use fewer.

I always just build to fit the vehicle. A long flat run for the bottom first. Curved runs around the idler and sprocket wheels. Flat runs with appropriately angled connector links for the section between the sprockets and idlers to attach those to the bottom run. And finally an upper run, with or without sag depending upon vehicle track type.Geeked
