                        i was reading the post dealing with Band of Brothers and the 88s. And i was thinking about the movie HBO did. IT came out around the same time as Saving Private Ryan, and it was called When Trumpets Fade. Its actually on sale now for around $10 DVD. Its about the campaign in the Hurtgen Forest. In it they come under attack from a couple of tanks that destroy them at a bridge and later they assault the tanks on the top of a hill. I was wondering if any of you guys know what kind of tanks they are, cause i was just thinking about it and couldnt quite come across it.

                        Sounds very interesting. The original battle was very expensive in US casualties and rather overlooked by the history books.

                        oh its a great movie, rusn about a little over an hour and a half, it follows a private whos entire unit was killed and he was instantly promoted to Seargent, and given replacements. it follows the 5 guys in his squad and an army medic who work around with him. I dont know about the accuracy of the film, but it certainly is enertaining, i would recommend it.

                        Its a touching film. Try to understand how cold those boys were, and how insane that assault against those guns was.

                        As far as the armor, I forget the tanks that were used but they made them look like German units. I'll have to put my DVD in and see if I can figure it out. I remember a post at one time here and someone knew what they were. In a similar post I realized that the Tiger used on discovery/history channel was really a T34 hehehehehe.

                        ...........it's a story about the 28th inf.div...nicknamed ...the bloody bucket ......my dad was a corporal in that div. during the korean war....now they are a national guard unit...and have a web site .....jeffl

                        I think a couple of them were panthers. Not sure which ones thaough. The movie is great. It is still playing here in Fla. on HBO from time to time. Come to think of it It was the 88's that were used against the troops at the bridge. The squad took out two of them in the movie.

                        It's been about a year since I saw that movie.
                        The tanks I think were meant to simulate Panzer IV's, but I could be right out to lunch.

                        I'm with Robert, possibly out to lunch, but I think they called them Panzer IV's, but if I recall they never really showed any close ups of them.

                        I haven't seen it, but it wouldn't surprise me. The Germans generally used the Panzer IV as their maneuver tank in the late-war period, because, well, because the Panzer IV could. Smile [:)]

                        Those interested in Hurtgen can't do better than read Eisenhower's book The Bitter Woods, which covers the Hurtgen and the events leading up to the great German counteroffensive in the Ardennes.
