From photographs I would say the wire cutter was a field modification made out of 2" angle iron. Welded to the front bumper with supports at 45 degrees that are about 2 1/2' (750mm) long. Don't forget the notch at the top to 'catch' the wire. It looks like a upside down right triangle.

If getting into Allied vehicles look into a resin accessory set. They usually contain way more than you need for one vehicle. Check the pictures to get the most for your pound.

Legend Productions and Black Dog are two that supply a lot of resin goodies in each order.

Welcome to Allied subject building!  If I may: 1) primer: US painted equipment had top coats baked on and notoriously tough.  Modelers should not follow the Axis fad of paint chipping.  A better thing to do is to weather it dusty and show areas of darker olive drab, where the crew has scuffed off the dust to reveal the base color.

2) loadout of .30cal ammo.  Your scenario of a recon jeep in the ETO is sketchy.  Frankly there were much better vehicles to perform this role.  Plus a recon jeep wouldn't need a load of ammo -- recon vehicles aren't meant to engage in firefights.  You see any enemy, you retreat.  A huge load out of ammo just doesn't make sense.  Remember, this isn't the Western Desert where long range recon vehicles were far from friendly lines.  In the ETO, access to friendly supplies wasn't difficult.

But this is my opinion only.

Baked on paint eh? That's good to know, thanks bud.

What I'll do is build the basic Jeep. The decal guide shows a recon variant with the .30 cal in the rear and the wire cutter up front. I like that.

I'm thinking perhaps use the rear Jerry can and have an extra one or two in the back along with a couple of ammo tins and bags/etc. I'll post pictures of dry fitted stuff and you guys can help me decide on a sensible amount of stowage if that's ok?

Hoping to make a start over the long weekend, either tomorrow or Sunday into Monday.

There is a recent photo of an ancient Jeep in this thread. Other than rust, there's not much evidence of primer.

But about primer - I got no idea. The Willys Jeeps I've driven has had every chip painted over.. Though sloppily.

Hi guys,

Sorry - I don't really like posting 'I want free stuff' threads but with this Willys Jeep I'm starting on is going to require a couple of helmets and bags/rifles (M1's etc). I could buy a US GI accessory set but I'm only in need of a few small items and some helpful information Wink

I'm making her into a long range recon vehicle and plan to kit the rear out with plenty of ammo cases for the .30cal (I have the right ammo cases I think) and a replacement RB Brass barrel for the .30cal which I also have.

I have a resin fold-down windshield with canvas cover that should look great painted up and I'll make a Milliput canvas bag but what I don't have anything of (being a mainly German Armour builder) is any suitable bags, helmets or general stowage. I'm perhaps needing a helmet or two, a couple of satchels/bags and a suitable Jerry can. All I have is LOADS of German stuff!I can show some German cans that have been commandeered but a couple of Allied cans would be nice.

If anyone has a few spare bits and bobs in the spares tub they can send me I'd be very greatful. Of course I'll cover any postage costs and money for a beer

I'd like to use the piano wire decapitator cutter on the front bumper smile p but I'm not finding many pictures of ETO Jeeps with this fitted. Were they actually used widespread or just in Woodland (Ardennes maybe)? I'm thinking a recon vehicle would need this? I also have a set of the US square oil/gas containers in Resin- what colour should I use for them? I was thinking about doing some light hairspray chipping on the wheel rims. When chipped would bare metal be exposed or another primer colour first?

Sorry about all the questions but I am a total newbie when it comes to Allied stuff which is why I'm building the Bronco Comet and Dragon IC Hybrid Firefly to build (both in my stash) to try and even the odds in my cabinet! All I have in there is at present that isn't German or Russian is the Tamiya Pershing which is one of my early builds and a 1/48 Tamiya Firefly which was actually only my second ever build!

If anyone can help with info and a few US/UK stowage items that would be great. My spares tub is pretty full so I may be able to help folk out too.
