Dragon Jagdtiger track replacements
Posted by M1 A1 A2 Tanker on Monday, May 7, 2012 12:34 AM

Hi,
     All

I am looking for some ideas about what I can use to replace the 5-piece tracks in Dragon's 1/35 Jagdtiger Porche w/ Zimmerit kit #6493.

I have already tried buying the Fruilmodels AT-22 but these where still more than I wanted to deal with and I sold them. What I would really like is a nice pair of Link and Length or DS Type tracks.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance......................

Scott

P.S. I have also played with the idea of selling this kit and getting the Tamiya one. But I don't know if there is any aftermarket Zimmerit available for it.

I heard the tracks were a bear in the Porsche, so that's why I opted for the late with magic tracks. I'm pretty sure they don't make DS tracks. I'm afraid your pretty limited. Does Modelkasten make any?

Hey,
         Eric

Yes. they do. Product SK-21. But according to a couple of different listings these are the Henschel type. So I don't think they would work for the Porsche type.

Thanks

Those too could be for a Henschel. What is the main difference between the tracks? If it's so teeny, then why not just plop on the Henschels? Only you will know unless you perhaps enter in a contest. Are the sprockets different? That might be a problem.

Hey,
         Eric and Rob

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, I would image Tamiya indy links for the Henschel. I did find one source that stated that the Porsche used suspension similar to a Elefant/Ferdinand design.

So I'm wondering if I could use the DS tracks from my Dragon 1/35 Elefant kit.

The source is here: http://www.fprado.com/armorsite/tiger-variations.htm

Other than this I am seriously considering bagging this kit and getting the Tamiya one as at least one source says that NO Henschel used Zimmerit. Although, Wikipedia is the source. Hmm

Thanks again for the replies...............

No, pretty sure they are different from the Elefant tracks. The suspension is staggered on the KT and not so on the Elefant.

Pretty sure you're right that no Henschel JT's had the zimmerit, but all the early production Porsche suspensions did.

Yeah, also with some further research I found that the Porsche type had only 1 centered guide horn.

Found it here.

http://www.missing-lynx.com/articles/german/amjt/jtigerbov10.jpg

So I thought hey maybe I could just cut off the extra horn right? Wrong. After finding good pictures of both a Porshce JT (at Bovington in the U.K.) and a Henschel JT (at Aberdeen in the US) I compared the two track patterns. And while very similar they are definitely IMO different.

So I think either I go with the Tamiya kit or deal with the 5-piece tracks in the Dragon one.

Thanks

Scott

Are you talking about a new Tamiya release or the older kit?
