Proposed wip thread on SA-2 missile on transport trailer
Posted by Shellback on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 6:30 PM

I'm thinking about starting assembly on Trumpeters kit  204 . Question is where to post the wip ? Its has a truck , a trailer and a missile . Maybe that qualifies as armor and maybe not . I really dont want to post it in the aircraft or auto forums . What do you think ?

Definitely belongs here! It's meant to kill AC so I don't think they would take too kindly to it! Stick out tongue

Oh yeah I definitely agree with Bill... we need something to remind those wingy nuts that we are NOT easy targets. Big Smile  You have my full attention once again!

Consider skipping the WIP; post your finished results here.  Get the WIP material together and submit it to Finescale for publication.

Hey Tread , i saw a few of these built up on the internet and i really like the detail in the kit . the Zil -157 truck has the complete running gear , including engine . The detail on the sa-2 is well done also . I'd like to get another of these and convert the tractor to carrying a Russian or Chinese AA gun , maybe some off the wall conversion made in one of those 3rd world countries .Yes

Howdy Carl!

I built this kit once, before joining the forum, it's really very nice. Of course if you look hard enough, you can always find something to improve - like the brake system on the trailer. If you insisted, you could make three WIPs out of this one - the truck, the trailer and the missile! Or a nice dio of a SA-2 launcher being reloaded. I did my model in this funky russian "defilade" painting - OG with white fender edges and wheel hubs. Only downside to it is how hard it is to find references for that baby - even the truck, which was built in tens if not hundreds of thousands pieces is still top secret in Russia, not to mention the highly specialised trailer.

By the way, while building it I found out they were driving them babies like shown on the boxtop only around the launcher site, to reload the launchers, so it's a kind of "yard tractor". If they wanted to get the misilles to the launcher site over a greater distance, they used a different trailer, that carried two misilles, partially disassembled (the fins!) in long transport cylinders. Then, on site, the misilles were assembled, tanked with fuel (oxidiser remained in the transport trailer until short before the missile got on the launcher - otherwise it would be too dangerous), and loader on the trailer you are going to model (the correct name for it is actually reloader, not transport trailer).

Here, let me get you a photo of my tractor:

I'm sure you will have fun with this set, good luck with it and have a nice day

Pawel , thanks for all of the info ! I have done a little research so far . Your info will really help . I have the model of the launcher and your idea about the dio sounds interesting . There must be some apparatus for sliding the missile from the trailer unto the launcher but i have not seen it yet . Your build looks great , just like the Russians would present it at a May day parade . Yes

Nah, Carl, all of the hardwere is already there, that's the beauty of this system. You see, what they do is to rotate the missile to the side, and then they line up the launcher rail with the trailer's rail and they just slide the missile onto the launcher rail from the launchers front, if I'm not mistaken.

I did a quick search and I got some more info for you - the reloader we're talking about is oficially designated PR-11. When the tractor changes to a more modern machine, this designation also changes.

Here's the picture of the actual missile transporter:

Here's one pulled by a more modern ZiL-131

And here's a nice drawing from a Polish site:

This funny outline on the trailer is an optional canvas cover - once I thought it would be cool to model those canvas, but then again it would put the missile out of sight, and it was also almost never used anyhow.

Here's a nice one, showing the start of the reloading process:

Now imagine they rotate the rail 90 degrees and slide the missile backwards on the launcher. Shortly before that the missile would be tanked with compresed air and oxidant (from the large tank in front of the reloader). Please note the stand, the rear reloader wheels are standing on, to make sure they're on the correct spot.

Hope it helps, have a nice day

Paweł

PS. Oh, and that link is soo cool!

Waynec , now i have 2 of these in my stash ........Whistling........shame on me , but aint it fun !

Pawel , wow , very nice site for the info and referrrence Yes I'm going to need all of that when i get started on this build . Interesting how the missile rotates 90  degrees on the trailer for reloading .I'm also going to look and see if there are nay after market sets for this model , although the kit looks like it has enough detail as is .

Thanks again manYes

i have a lot of pairs in my stsah. my rationale is 1 in case i screw something up and/or 2 i can always sell it. most are from stash sales or online sales. i may have to pick up the sam-2 and launcher. that would be a diorama similar to the picture earlier. while looking, look for arab soldiers too. mine has color schemes for NVA and egyptian.

Waynec , i was going to try and cut back on adding to my stash but i couldnt resist the good buy i got on the second kit of this sa-2 w/ transport . The sa-2 w/launcher looks like a nice kit . The launcher can be elevated and rotated . I havent noticed arab type figures but i,m sure something could be found or existing figures modified . I just had a conversation with scratchbuilder about the G.B. Yes
