M24 Chaffee (early version) walkaround needed
Posted by Zero Enna on Monday, June 4, 2012 10:56 PM

All I could find are M24 "late" walkarounds. Is there any "early" version walkarounds? I don't know which are their correct designations, but for "early" I mean the one which used the T72E1 steel tracks and "late", the one which used the T85E1 rubber tracks. I think there are other different details between these two versions. Thanks a lot in advance. Best regards.

José.

That might be kind of tough since the M24 was used for quite some time. Most were updated along the way. Any walk arounds would be of display vehicles that were in service fairly late before becoming gate guards.

Not knowing anything about the tank beyond its name i can tell you if any are what your are looking for.

Those are all late Chaffees. The quick way to ID the late tank from the front is to look at the final drive housings on the front of the hull. If they have a series of bolts, those were a late feature added to install a dozer blade to the tank.

Now if you look at this front hull, it has the early style final drive housings, but the late style tracks.

"those were a late feature added to install a dozer blade to the tank."

Hi Rob:  I'm pretty sure that it's been shown (Hunnicutt) that the bolted pads on front (and on the rear bulkhead) were used for a wading device, and not (as has been assumed) for a dozer attachment.  Some examples of these later M24s did get issued to combat units in WW2.

I'm modelling an early M24 indeed. I'll apply a winterwash, and I've only seen early M24 with winterwash, so early rounded final drive housings are OK, my doubt is about the rear part. All M24 kits have two squared shaped plates, each with a  hole in the center and bolted to the lower rear plate... A pic is better:

The bolts are missing though, but the holes are still there. These plates are absent in Latrun's M24:

This last tank has late track, but early hull details, so my guess is those plates are part of the diference between early and late... Can anyone confirm this? I already removed the plates, they were unnacurate anyway, but I can make new ones with plastic sheet. The towing shackels are different as well, but they may be just replaced.  Thanks a lot in advance. Best regards.

P.S. Oh yes! Not even rack for the early tank's rear... I want to make that rack anyway.
