While the paint on my MAZ 543 is drying i started this project using the Monogram M48A2.
Since this only has 3 top track wheels which makes it an M60A1 (M48 have 5 top wheels)
The 2 hull halves glued together. A large gap was down the middle of the hull I filled the seam with cement dryed than sanded smooth. The 6 assembled top wheels before semi-gloss black.
The gap between the hull and the rear radiator vents was filled with .015 styrene sheet. Smoothed with an xacto knife and sandpaper.
Top hull half glued to the lower half.
the turret was deleted with sheet of .015 sheet which is where two hatchs go, flatter for the bridge to go over top.
The hatch with the angled bars to divide the viewports.

I don't mean this to sound negative in any way, but the number of return rollers isn't a significant determinant to distinguish between the M48 and M60 families. It is correct for an M48A2 (as represented by the kit) to have three return rollers. A more significant difference would be the hull front, which is rounded on the M48 series, but consists of flat panels on the M60 series.
Ok thank you! and yes i am going to scratchbuild the bridge. I'll find ref pics to correct it. my research sources stunk thanks for the info!
It may be simpler to make it an M48 AVLB instead of an M60 AVLB at this early stage.

I agree, as late as 1985 both M48A5 AVLB and M60A1 AVLB were in use. It was my original MOS in 1983; I was trained on the M60 hull in AIT but my Guard unit had the M48 hull. You are better off trying to make an M48A5 AVLB than trying to make an M60 series hull from that ride.
I loved those things. As a young teenager, I lived at Ferris Barracks in Erlangen, right next to the motor pool. Occasionally, they would open one of them up (to wash it maybe?). I was never one of the daring kids who would scale the fence from the playground to get a closer look.

Just FYI, and to save ya from any Combat Engineers out there, AVLB is Army-speak for Armored Vehicle Launched Bridge...

Progress Update
The front main hinge for the bridge mechanism
The main bridging apparatus made from .015 styrene sheet, mocked up with 1/8 tube serving as the pin.
.015 sheet laminated over the drivers hatch as it appears not to be there in my ref pics.

The main piston made from two segments of 3/8 tube one spliced and mounted on top of the other.
The top guide wheels with the "tread" semi-gloss black tamiya acyrlic and the I beam for the rear bridge support.
The road wheels and drive sprockets assembled.
