Zimmerit for Elefant
Posted by Ben323 on Friday, June 22, 2012 9:36 AM

Hey guys,

Just a quick couple of questions

First, did all late war Elefant tank destroyers have zimmerit ?

If they did, what is a cheap way of making it? I know about aves apoxy, but could I use tamiya putty or squadron putty? (They are the only putty I have, plus its inexpensive)

Thanks,

Ben K.

The cheapest way is to use the hot knife blade method. Basically clip the tip off of an X-Acto knife, heat it up and use it to carefully inscribe the surface of the plastic with the zimmerit pattern. Some folks have adapted this to the tip of a soldering iron, others have had a candle burning next to them to continuously reheat the tip.

I'd practice on an old kit, the flat areas of the scrap sprue or the inner surface of the hull before I't try it on the outside.

Google hot knife blade zimmerit for a bunch of links of folks who did it.

A member Crocket was a natural applicator with a soldiering iron. He got this real cheapo at Radio Shack for about $10. Just make sure it doesn't produce more then 15 watts or something like that, otherwise it will really melt the plastic.

Another method as you say, would be to take a screwdriver and use putty. Yes Tamiya putty and Miliput are good options as well.

ive used spakling putty and a fine toothed hack saw or saw blade....run it across the putty one row of squares at a time. Works great for 1/35...anything less than that and its tough to control.

here i tried it on a 1/48 whirblewind....its a bit larger in scale than i would have liked. I did sand it lightly afterwards to tone/scale it down a bit
