Italeri Tiger I Tp

Thought I'd show you my Tiger and test the photo embedding as well.

Sorry about the background. These pictures were taken a while back ... I have since purchased a sheet of blue posterboard so any future pics should be better.

Have a good one people.

Very nicely doneYes I am slowly working on this same kit. How much and what Aftermarket did you put into this build? I see new tracks, engine screens, and possibly some other stuff?

Really nice finish on her. Just goes to show you that old kits can still be built up into gems.

Thanks so much you guys. Let's see if I can remember everything. Base kit was the

Italeri Pz.Kpfw VI Tiger AusF. E (Tp) in 1/35 scale.

AFV Club Early Tiger tracks

Eduard exterior photo-etch for Italeri Tiger I AusF.E/1 .....a different kit? I think it's the same kit but without the air cleaners.

I can't remember who made the engine grilles. Probably Eduard but they're the grilles for the Tamiya kit  (cheaper). I had to trim them a bit to make them fit.

Replaced tow cables with thick picture hanging wire.

Replaced barrel cleaning rods with wire.

Painted it Tamiya desert yellow.

Dry brushed and color modulated flat surfaces with desert yellow mixed with white.

Pin washed with mixed burnt umber and black oil paint.

Chipping added by sponge and fine brush using Tamiya german grey.

Made random scuff marks all over with black , brown , and white colored pencils.

Gave it a lght wash of white oil paint and using a wide flat brush dipped in low odor thinner, made      downward streaks

Rust on the mufflers is black and brown pastel chalk.

Added rust and dirt streaks with burnt umber and black oil paints.

A couple of dirt washes on lower surfaces and wheels using AK Interactive Dark Earth pigment and MIG Europe dust.  Also made some mud with these and smudged a little on the wheels and other lower areas.

The tracks were painted Tamiya gun metal and then given two different light washes . One made from Black chalk dust and rubbing alcohol...the other from brown chalk dust and rubbing alcohol.

I alternated between the two until I was happy with the color but looking at them now they look too dark to me.

When dry , I rubbed them with a dry sponge to burnish them to a metallic sheen. Then i rubbed the contact points with my fingers dampened with water to show brighter wear. I haven't quite perfected this yet though. And I learned that this technique does NOT work on band tracks. Ugh.

Then I gave them heavy washes of MIG europe dust in the recesses.

I think that pretty much covers it!

Just one observation, you've got your spare track upside down....;)

AAAAUUUUGH!!!

Oh,well.   I think there's supposed to be five holders on the left side and two on the right as well.  But if that's the worst fault to be found then I'm happy.

It's not possible to attach them backwards?

The state of Tiger research has now advanced to the point where the Italeri kits aren't taken seriously as accurate representations.

For example, none of the Tigers in Africa HAD spare tracks on the turret.

I build for fun.

I'll usually make a rudimentary attempt at some accuracy. , but I just don't have the energy , the time , nor the finances to become an authority on AFV's....or anything else for that matter.

Italeri kits are accurate enough for some one like me...and the prices are acceptable (although slowly rising it seems).

Given enough time one could become an authority just by frequenting forums like these. So far I've learned two things about Tigers from my post!

And for that we thank you!

Mike.

I just remembered that my Tiger was supposed to be from 2,Kompanie , SPZ.ABT.504 in Sicily 1943.

I used desert yellow because I had no tan to paint it with.

Mike

I wasn't being critical so please don't be offended, your work/painting is very impressive mate, and your philosophy is the same as mine.... the spare track observation was just that, something that stuck out to me.  In real life the way you placed them they would sit to low on the front hull and ground on any uneven surface.

have fun

No offence taken. Observations don't bother me at all.  If you hadn't pointed the track issue out to me then I probably would have made the same mistake on the next tiger i build.

My comment was in response to Bryden's post about Italeri kits. My point was just that I don't mind kits that lack a little in accuracy because I can usually  find them at a reasonable price. It's a compromise I'm willing to make.

And please don't hesitate to make any other "observations". How will I learn otherwise? Compliments are nice but observations sometimes lead to new knowledge...and that why I'm here!

Peace.

Mike.

I'm liking your weatering techniques and the details look crisp . Question , is the tow shackle a stock kit part ?

Here's a pic of the spare tracks on the front glacis for reference . Toast

Thanks Shellback.  Not exactly sure what you mean by "shackle". The only towing part I replaced was the cable using picture wire. The cable ends were cut from the kit part. and superglued on.

Mike

I've only built one Italeri armour kit an old BT-5, never been that keen on them nor Revell (except aircraft or 1/72 armour), but looking at your Tiger might have another look.

Good job on the AFV club tracks, I always go for them as well.  Did this Italeri come with the link and length tracks?

If you like Tigers try the AFV club 1/48's, very nice details and good prices.

Eoin

The kit did come with link and length. But they were the late tracks. This kit wasn't the best but it's not the worst either. If you're used to Dragon or Tamiya kits, then these won't measure up.
