Thanks. Another question is which Co. landed first at Utah Beach? I know only two DD Shermans arrived on Omaha on the 6th.

Thanks for the help, especially from Robert. On the subject, I got Tamiya's M4 Early Production today. The kit has markings for H Co., 66th Armoured Regiment, 2nd Armoured Divison, Normandy Aug. 1944. When did they land and where?

Definitely NOT trying to steal Robert's thunder.

But, I'll take a stab

The 2nd Armorded Division came ashore between the 10-13 June at Utah.

Now that will not be off the top of my head ... I'll have to do a little research on this one.

Ahhh... not much beats the putter sputter of an M4's radial at idle or the grumble of an M4A3! Classics!

Just a small correction to Digger's post on the E-8, it was the M4A3 E8 that was introduced into action, not the M4A1 E8. The M4A1 version is not known to have entered combat and was mostly used Stateside with a large number being exported post-war.

The first use of the HVSS-M4A1E8 was during the battle of the bulge. The first units to get this tank was the 4th armored div. in Bastogne.A total of 109 tanks were sent, most went to the 4th armored div.and 22 of them went to the thrid army under Patton. There first trail under fire was at Bastogne. The date they enter into service was Dec.22,1944. Ok .... here comes just a quick list off the top of my head.

U.S. forces - M4 (75), M4A1 (75), M4 (105) ....
M4A3's came into the game after D-Day, same with the 76mm gun tanks (I believe).
No Easy-8 suspensions at that time.

Commonwealth Forces - M4 (75), M4A1 (75), M4A2 (75), M4A4 (75), M4 (105)

Hope this helps a bit, if you need more info, just yell and I'll do my best.

US DD's were modified M4A1's.... Remember, the 70th Tank Battalion landed all but three of theirs at Utah (the landing craft with those three struck a mine and sank).

Tappie,

I'm sure you're right. The Shermanator will know the answers. In fact, I'd bet he doesn't even need to go to a ref book to check it out!

I am sure Robert can help on this one, but I'm open to all the help I can get. We ( that is the Vaal Scale Modeler's Club - IPMS SA Vaal ) plan an impressive club project for the Africa Militaire in September 2004. As I understand from the organisers the event will involve an International modeling competition. Right to the problem - which variants of the M4 were used in the D-Day landings and more specifically when did the HVSS suspensions enter the fray? I tried some web sites but can not for the life of me get the info I'm looking for.

To give you all an idea, this club build will involve all the modeling dissiplines and 10 members. As soon as the planning and research is done, we will post some pic's. Keep you all posted.
