denatured alcohol and mineral spirits.....
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, August 6, 2012 8:11 PM

I was cleaning and found these. 1/2 bottle of denatured alcohol and 1/2 bottle odorless mineral spirits. Can I use the mineral spirits for oil washes ?? Does the denatured alcohol have any use ???

Mineral spirits: Yes, you can use it for oil washes

Denatured alcohol: Use for cleaning up acrylic paints. Can also be used for thinning certain acrylic paints (works well with flat Tamiya acrylics).

Be careful with that "odorless" mineral spirits.  You will find it is milky white in color and may mess up the color and nature of any paint you may try to thin with it.  This is a product ot the environmentalist /tree hugger movement.  Use regular turpentine or mineral spirits, the stinky kind, for best results, with enamel paint only.

Denatured alcohol, I believe is the same as the rubbing alcohol/antiseptic you get at the drug store, but test it first, I'm not sure of that.

Gimme a pigfoot, and a bottle of beer...

I've been using basic, buy it in a gallon, it stinks like all hell, run of the mill paint thinner for my oil washes, always over sprayed acrylics. Would the mineral sprits be better ?? Kinda nervous to use it after your comment Chuck....thx again

Rubbing alcohol is diluted Isopropyl alcohol. Denatured alcohol is (usually) ethyl alcohol to which chemicals have been added to render it undrinkable. The two alcohols have different properties. One can thin Tamiya acrylics much further with denatured alcohol than with Iso.
