Nashorn Question
Posted by 4x4maniac on Thursday, August 9, 2012 10:56 AM

Hey all -

Yet another question for the forum - I am building Dragon's Nashorn Premium & have a question regarding divisional markings ...... The references I have come up with are very non-descript  but I have 1 picture in particular purporting to be a Grossdeutschland Rhino at  Kursk .... anyone have knowledge of an SS panzer division that may have also used the Nashorn in that time frame as well ?

As always - thank y'all in advance !

Nashorns weren't assigned to specific Panzer Divisions as a rule. They instead were assigned to heavy (schweres) Panzer Jager Abteilungs (sPzJgAbts) that were moved around as independent units and temporarily attached where needed. That means you will find them all over the place depending on the fighting conditions/needs...so it's plausible that Nashorns would've been attached to a particular SS PzDiv for a period of time before moving on. There were more than one sPzAbt equipped with the Nashorn in operation on the Eastern Front at the time of Kursk but I don't know which ones were specifically engaged in the battle over others without digging deeper. HTH.

As far as i know, all Hornisse/Nashorns were assigned to schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilungen. I am not sure any were assigned to a Div. But i could be wrong. Also, the name Nashorn was not introduced until 1944, after Kursk. But i don't thionk there is any difference between the inital Hornisse and the Nashorns. But i am sure someone will know better.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so
