Italian armor use in North Africa
Posted by Tankluver on Wednesday, August 15, 2012 12:37 AM

I was trying to find some pics of Italian armor and the German Ramcke's brigade fighting side by side, did this ever happen. I read Hans Von Lucks book and he said he fought alongside some italian units. I know the Italians had there Ariborne in Africa also, would they have fought alongside there own armor?

I know of 2 Armoured units that were in North Africa which may help you in a net search. One being the 132nd Ariete Armoured Division and the second being the 133rd Littorio Armoured Division.

Certainly when viewed on a tactical map, German and Italian units did fight side by side.  I can't say for sure there were times you would find them a stone's throw distance from each other.

Besides the armoured units mentioned, light tanks and armoured cars were used by bersaglieri, recc units and cavalry.

regards,

Jack

I dont think that the Italains care too much for the Ramcke Brigade. IIRC, after Alamein, they hijacked an Italian units transports so they could retreat and left the Italians behind to be captured.

EDIT- scratch that, it was a British unit whose trucks they came across and hijacked. But the Ramcke fought alongside the Italian Bologna Division, a "semi motorised" division.
