Jagdpanther paint question
Posted by tigerman on Sunday, August 19, 2012 1:38 PM

Hi all. I'm building a Tamiya Jagdpanther Late for the Steel Cats GB on Sept. 1st.

My question is: was the base color an olivegrun or dunkelgelb?

I'm not certain, but i think the green base colour was introduced very late in the war. I don't know the actual dates, none of the referances i have, even Panzer Colours, even mention it. I guess it would depend on how late your late Jagdpanther is.

cancel my last, i have found mention of it in the last Panzer Tracts issue on the panther. It states an order from 20th Dec 44 giving a list of external components that were to be painted Green. But i am not sure if this means small components or the whole vehicle.

There is also the issue that in Sept 44 an order was using stating that Panther were to leave the factory in red primer and the camo applied to this in the field. I know Tiger II during the bulge campaign were in primer. I was not aware that this also applied to Panthers. I can only assume it also applies to Jagdpanthers.

I am sure that bill will now more precisely.

The answers are pretty much listed above. It all depends upon the production time frame. Late 1944, base color of Primer Red (German Cholos? Wink ) Early 1945 Olive Green base color is possible. And of course, as with most German armor, there are exceptions.

Thanks gents. Since my jagdpanther only comes with the older exhausts and not the ones with the dampers, would that make it more of a late 44?

Excellent. It's just that the box looks mostly green.

Excellent. It's just that the box looks mostly green.

Yes, but vehicles that fought in Western Europe tended to have much heavier green paint schemes to match the foliage.

IIRC, only about the first 50 or so Jagdpanthers were "early" production with the differnt mantlet and barrel.

The monobloc gun, whcih i believe is the main feature to disiquish a ''Mid'' production was introduced in April 44. The production figures suggested that 32 were delievered upto the end of April. I was surprised the number of earlys was so low.

Weren't the "earlies" the ones with the Porshce suspension?  Or is there a distinction between initial production and early production?

Nope, no Porsche suspensions on Panthers or Jagdpanthers. They did have them on the Ferdy/Elefant, Porsche Tiger, and the first 50 or so Jagtigers.

Late production Jagdpanthers are defined by the two piece 88mm barrel and the dampers on the exhaust, as well as bolted mantlet, however some of the earlier Late's had the Panther exhausts pipes.

Eric,

Only thing I will chime in with is that after Oct '44 vehicles were leaving the factories with factory-applied schemes (the short lived Ambush/Disc schemes began at this point) and they were no longer receiving a base coat of DY over the primer as had been done previously. There's always some debate over the exact wording/meaning of the paint orders in terms of whether primer was going to be included in the camo schemes or whether the camo schemes were to be applied directly over the primer. For your purposes, I believe your JP is sporting production features that would've been present in late '44 and early '45. This is when the schemes in use were heavily dominated by olive green and featured some of the angular/striped patterns as well. You've got a lot of leeway but it's unlikely it would have a field-applied scheme.  HTH!

LOL, no Bill, it doesn't . I really don't care for the striped pattern, so I'll kind of match the box or directions. I like the camo they use. I think I could get away with either, but I'll probably spray olivegrun and then the other two colors, rather then waste DY and then spray the others. Make sense? Tongue Tied

The two cooling pipes on the left side were introduced in July 1944. The mufflers begain to be fitted in Oct.So this would place your vehicle betwen that period and would also give you the option for Zimmerite.

So there you go Eric...the door opens back up again for field-applied camo if you choose. Wink
