LRDG Desert Pink?
Posted by Doctor Guilty on Monday, September 3, 2012 6:11 PM

Hi, all.

Though I mostly work with miniatures now, I'm a longtime subscriber and do try to get a larger-scale kit onto my workbench from time to time. Lately I'm trying to find a good match for the "desert pink" seen on the LRDG's Chevrolet 1533s and such.

For 1/100  and 1/144 scale miniatures, colors like Vallejo's Basic Skintone work very well, but I'm also looking for an appropriate spray (or airbrush-compatible) paint for larger kits. I understand there used to be a "Desert Pink" color from Polly S, but it's long been discontinued.

Thanks very much for your help.

There is a mixing formula using Tamiya paints on the instruction sheet for the SAS land Rover for Desert pink. I have them at home and will try to find them for you.

Sand-Pink : Matt White: 10 + Matt Red: 1 + Buff: 2 .  Th3e formula is for Tamiya paints, but it may be close for other paints as well.

This is how the formula quoted by Mechtech turns out in 1/35.  Just note, there is some lightening due to pastels etc, but should give you a good idea to start with.

Not sure how you need to adjust for the scale factor, i'd suggest a little more buff to lighten it, without washing it out.

That's exactly what I had in mind. I have the right colors already, so I'll have to do some experimenting. Thanks very much.
