i'm looking for the primer color/colors for U.S. stuff TANK'S JEEP'S ect. i've seen red on models and other build's but looked on line and it looks like battle ship gray any help would be greatly appreciated.

The only one I've seen for models is Vellejo's red brown primer. You could look form automotive ones which may be cheaper and wont need an airbrush

The fact was US manufactured millitary machinery had different types of primer depending on the underlying metal or part or factory preference.  Some had the iron oxide red primer, some had the medium grey primer.  I believe there was a zinc chromate yellow-green primer for some parts too.  They were dipped or sprayed.

 

Why is this info hard to come by?  B/c the topcoat enamels were VERY tough and did not chip.
