One fine day in Tunisia
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, February 12, 2004 1:58 AM
I have two, umm, queries.

First, in ze book ov inschtructions, the Tiger E/H1 should be a field green for in Tunisia, and a sandy-ish kind of colour for Italy. Ehh? I thought Tunisia was the desert? Never the less, green its going to be..

But that brings me to the second, eh, thing... If it was in Tunisia, which allied vehicle would it most likely have run into/over? And having said that, which one would it have turned into scrap in Italy? I've got a couple lined up: Jeep, Churchill, Quad gun tractor, Sherman.. I want to add an Allied vehicle in some state of disrepair with the Tiger in a dio, y'see.. Preferably British.

Michael, I've seen a photo of exactly what you need, now I just need to find it! It is a photo of one of sPzAbt. 501 Tigers just after it ran over a car, cutting it in two. It was as if a giant brick just flatten the front half of the car, leaving the rear end intact. I'll keep looking for it. You'll love it.

How bizarre! I was actually thinking of have the Tiger in the process of driving over a jeep and calling the dio ´right of way´... Heh, great minds think alike, eh?

For Tunisia ... you're going to hit a couple of roadblokcs with tanks. The Jeep and Quad were both present there and so were the Sherman and the Churchill. Unfortunately, the Sherman & Churchill's that were in Tunisia were both earlier versions than what is available in the plastic market.
For Italy, you could use the Tamiya M4 Sherman, Jeep, & Quad. As far as the Churchill goes, I'm just not too sure if the Mk.VII saw action in the Italian campaign or not.
Happy Modelling and God Bless Robert

Michael,

The color of Tigers in Tunisia has been hottly debated on several other forums... Some suggest that they were painted with captured allied paints though the tiger color being signifigantly lighter. My thought is. They mixed their own Dunkelgelb with the Olive green to make it go farther thus comming up with the lighter color. Like i said its just a theory but it makes sense to me. Take it for what it is.. I am planning to do a Tunisia tiger as well and I was going to mix Dark Yellow and OD to get my color... I may be off base here... but like I said It makes sense to me...Big Smile [:D]

Michael, in its very first use in North Africa, a Tiger I lumbered out on the attack, confident of its great superiority, bypassed a 6-pounder, and was promptly destroyed by it. Perhaps you can model that! Big Smile [:D]

And the first time the Tiger II was used in combat it was also promptly destroyed (by T-34/85's). Gotta love it!

The first tigers sent to Tunisia arrived in panzer grey colour and were then later painted tan, green, olive green, pea green, captured US olive???? - no defenite answer here from my readings. In Italy they appeared dark yellow as that became the official colour for vehicles that left production lines after Feb '43.

Some other vehicles it would have met in Tunisia are: Stuarts, M3Lee & Grants, universal carrier, M3halftrack, T12Gun motor carriage, M10, T19Howitzer Motor carriage, Priest, and any of the various British scout and armoured cars.
