You could use either, really. The one with the scalloping on the "inside" of the ring is the later, lighter   version.  The one without is the earlier version as originally fitted to M1A1's. They are pretty much interchangeable.

If you are doing a particular vehicle at a particular time and place, you may need to refer to photos of the specific subject.

M1A2 drive sprocket question

The Tamiya M1A2 kit I'm building comes with two styles of rear drive sprockets, and it says to choose one, but the instructions don't elaborate as to either style is specific to any variant, or whether they're completely random.  Can anyone shed any light on this?  I'm building the tank as an M1A2 from 2nd platoon, F company, 2nd battalion, 3rd ACR.
