Decals on Zimmerit?
Posted by Newbee8742 on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 8:00 AM

I am finishing up a Mid Production Tiger Tank. I started to apply the decals onto the zimmerit that I applied with poly modeling clay. I am not too happy with the outcome. I was thinking about buying a few templates so I can paint the German cross and tank number onto the tank. Does anyone use this method? If so how was the outcome? Thanks Guys.

I have used stencils and decals both to good effect. Decals WILL work but require a lot of attention and solvent to get them to settle down. Stencils are a little easier on a Zim surface. If you go the decal route, be prepared to come back to the model every so often to poke and prod the decals and add more solution as needed. Let me modify my original statement a little... GOOD QUALITY decals will work. Cartograph comes to mind... Some of the old Tamiya decals or Academy may not due to the thickness.

So yeah, you can either get good quality decals or stencils... should be good to go either way.

What I do with decals on Zim is to apply the decals as I would normally do and zap it with a decal softener. When it is already almost dry, I press it on with a wet cotton swab. It worked with my Wittman Tiger.

I do exactly how constructor does it. Works well

You could just free-hand the markings. It might look a bit crude, but that also might look very accurate as well.

I'm currently working on Dragons Zimmed Tiger I Ausf E - the Zim effect on that is quite pronounced and it took a fair bit of effort to get the decals to sit.

Once basecoated and cammo'd I just used the normal method of adding spots of Gloss varnish through the airbrush on all the areas where decals would be going.

Once dry the decals went on and Kitchen paper was used to soak up excess water then after a few mnutes of dry time plenty of Micro Sol was added by brushing it gently over the decal - and then a bit more too! Be careful when brushing it on as you don't want to damage or move the decals. I then seal over the top with more varnish when the decals dry.

I can imagine a putty Zim job will be tricky so I'd definately try Gloss varnishing the decal areas first - or stencil painting like you say.
