I'll need to do a search for similar adaptations-though not yet sure how to search Google Images just yet.
It's a Dunkirk Logging Tractor, built by Dunkirk Engineering of Dunkirk, New York. That should help with a search. They also built wheeled steam tractors and geared logging locomotives. But this one is just whacky enough to be interesting!

Part of the mechanism reminded me of a Shay loco but didn't know about the production of logging locos.
....and, yes, it it a very interesting piece of technology !
