What's new and cheap in 1/35?
Posted by CarnivourousDonut on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 12:13 PM

I haven't built anything in a looooong time (gave away most of my kits some years ago) but I started playing the on-line computer game "World of Tanks" which is great fun and now my desire to build is back.

One of the things that drove me away initially was the cost of some of the kits, the Tamiya Char 1 Bis that had come out was near 60$ and even the hetzer was 45$

I don't really have that kind of dough to drop on a kit. 25$ is more my limit, so I'm probably dreaming, but can anything good be had in my price range?

As an aside, if you have some old kits you want to sell for reasonable, I'm open to offers.

The Trumpeter soviet KV-1 series is excellent ~$18-20.

Off of evil bay, you can probably get the Tamiya M4 or M4A3 or T-34s for ~$15.

Spring is the time for many model shows and the vendor rooms always have good deals.  Where do you live?

If Richmond has model swap meets, you might try checking for kits.

I bought a 1/35 Panther Smart kit for half the Dragon website price at a recent swap meet; an older kit, but I only recently returned to the hobby and don't have it in my stash.

Unfortunately the latest, newest  "kit du Jour" armor was not  price reduced.

Even try things like flea markets - they often have cheap kits.  May not be pick of the litter but at least something to get back into the swing of things

Squadron daily specials are a good place to find some really great deals. I think armor specials are on Tuesday and it always seems 3 out of 5 of the kits are right around 25 bucks.

That's a finished painted model and not a kit, so that's the reason for the heftier price tag. Wink

Thanks for the tips gang. They've (radically) changed this site since I was here last, and I can't find the links to the Squadron daily specials, help on this?

Have a look at Zvezda, the T-90 looks good and is quite well priced. Avoid the new Tiger they have just released as I haven't seen a review yet which is positive.

Just go to Squadron and click on the link at the top of the page that says specials. That will take you to their daily specials page. Also they have a Mystery deal that changes frequently that is usually a crazily discounted kit.

Whew !
Glad to hear that.
I didn't see anything mentioning pre-assembled on the web page, and I'd forgotten Dragon sold pre-assembled models.

Aside from shows, one of your best bets is some of the forums with buy/trade sites such as www.missing-lynx.com or www.armorama.com. I've found some great deals there, but you have to be fast. Ebay is also a good avenue to take.

Squadron.com. You should be able to find something on that page.

Gee, the big Richmond show was three weeks ago back on Feb 23rd! IPMS shows are one of the best places to pick up stuff at great prices. Our show in Roanoke VA is coming up in late summer but it's a bit of a drive for you.

I'll agree about Ebay, picked up an AFV Club M18 Hellcat with Squadron/Signal's 'US Tank Destroyers in Action' for twenty bucks, no one else even bid on it! Then there are some simply crazy over the top prices too, it pays to watch and wait. Sometimes DragonOnlineUSA has good deals going, they ran an excellent Black Friday sale last year. Squadron and Sprue Brothers are good too of course, again you have to watch and wait to get good discounts.

That's a sweet deal Wayne! They had the new Academy Warspite premium up there a week or so ago with tons of etch, barrels, and a wooden deck for right at $90!! I paid at least $170 for the kit and the Pontos set a while back from Freetime at a local show.

Do you have a Face Book account? If you do look up (Dale Wood in Waldron Arkansas). I have more kits than I'll ever be able to build. We can work out some deals, maybe, and I have some not so old kits I would part with. Send me a private message and we can get you something you might like.

This goes for anyone on this site. I might have someting you want and can't find.

Lucky me I saved all my  getting hard to find kits in the 80's and 90's. I was thinking of putting my kits to Evil Bay but I realised that going back modelbuilding and joined this awesome site.

Wellcome back after your break :)

The Zvezda T90 mentioned here has taken a lot of criticism for being inaccurate, the main problem seems to be that it sits to high and the suspension and side skirts would need to be lowered by 3mm.

There are other issues as well, please follow this link to find out more detail, the Russian colleagues are going to town with this :)

Personally I think that the 2 piece barrel is perhaps the biggest problem since there is a lot of radial detail.

What you get in the box builds into a very impressive kit though.

Very Best Regards
Johan
